Few performances in movie history have hit as hard, or as tragically, as Heath Ledger‘s turn as the Joker in The Dark Knight.

Released in 2008, the film was Christopher Nolan‘s follow-up to Batman Begins, bringing back Christian Bale as Batman while introducing Ledger as one of the character’s most iconic villains, opposite Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman. Ledger died in January 2008, months before the film’s release, after an accidental overdose involving prescription medications. Ledger’s Joker became a critical sensation, praised for its unpredictability and commitment, and he swept nearly every major awards show that season for Best Supporting Actor, including the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs, and finally the Academy Awards, making him only the second actor in Oscar history to win posthumously.
