In 1972, Uriah Heep released a song that turned a moment of sudden inspiration into a timeless rock masterpiece. The song, “Easy Livin’” came to songwriter Ken Hensley during a London taxi ride—and it came to him fast, proving that a truly magical track doesn’t always take long to write.
Written by Hensley for the 1972 album Demons and Wizards, “Easy Livin’” is a quick, two-and-a-half-minute ride highlighted by Hensley’s organ riff and a bluesy vocal performance by David Byron about life on the road and the burnout of stardom.
The song became Uriah Heep’s only Top 40 hit in the United States, reaching No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1972. It was also featured in the 1975 movie Dog Day Afternoon.

Hensley penned “Easy Livin’” in minutes, following a taxi ride home from a three-day recording session at Lansdowne Studios in London.
“We’d been rushing to finish an album before we left to go on tour,” Hensley told Classic Rock magazine in a 2018 interview. “We were having a conversation, and someone mentioned how people think we have such an easy life, how we just show up, collect the dollars and go home. The words ‘easy life’ stuck in my head. When the taxi dropped me off at my flat, I went in, put the kettle on, sat down at the piano, and within about ten minutes that song was finished.”
“We were already doing well, but that song took us to another level of success,” Hensley added of the classic rock hit.
While Uriah Heep had been known for longer prog-style tracks, ”Easy Livin’” was a quick track that became a game-changer for the British rock band.
“We were entering the era of the 3-minute single,” Hensley once explained to Classic Rock Revisited, adding, “Within three minutes of the cab dropping me off at home, the song was being born.”
Still, the rockers didn’t expect the level of success they found with the song.
Speaking with Songfacts, Hemsley admitted he knew “Easy Livin’” was good but didn’t pen it thinking it would be a massive hit.
“I knew we had a great song for the band and it translated into a great live ” he said. “But, since I never wrote (nor write) with a particular ‘destination’ in mind, I hardly ever considered that a song may succeed to any extent at all.”
Fifty-four years after its release, ‘Easy Livin’” remains one of Uriah Heep’s most beloved classics—a song written in 10 minutes about how hard life can be but remembered decades later as the band’s ultimate feel-good anthem.
