Steam Treatment vs. Cryonite Freezing for Chemical-Free Bed Bug Control

Finding bed bugs is stressful enough. For homeowners who want to avoid pesticides, the next question is harder: Which chemical-free treatment actually works?

Two professional options are steam and rapid freezing with pressurized carbon dioxide, often called Cryonite. Both kill bed bugs without leaving a conventional pesticide residue, but they work differently and have different limitations. Neither should be treated as a guaranteed stand-alone solution.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends an integrated pest management approach for bed bugs, combining appropriate control methods with inspection and continued monitoring.

Need professional help? Orkin offers free, no-obligation quotes after assessing the situation and can help you create a plan for eliminating bed bugs from your home.

Is steam or freezing better for bed bug treatment?

Steam is generally better suited to treating accessible surfaces such as mattresses, upholstered furniture, bed frames and cracks where the technician can maintain direct heat exposure. Pressurized CO₂ snow is useful for targeted treatment around heat-sensitive belongings and areas where moisture is undesirable. Neither method reliably reaches every hidden bed bug, so inspection and follow-up remain essential.

How does steam kill bed bugs?

Professional steam treatment delivers lethal heat directly to bed bugs and their eggs. The EPA says steam cleaners can treat cracks, fabrics, carpets, baseboards, bed frames and furniture when the steam reaches at least 130°F and is applied without forceful airflow that could scatter the insects.

Penn State Extension describes steam as a useful option for objects that cannot be treated with insecticides, including couches, beds, toys and upholstered furniture. Its guidance stresses slow, methodical application because moving too quickly can leave cooler areas untreated.

Where Steam Works Well Against Bed Bugs

Steam has a practical advantage when a technician can physically follow the bed bug’s hiding places. That includes:

  • Mattress seams and surfaces
  • Upholstered furniture
  • Bed frames and headboards
  • Baseboards and accessible cracks
  • Other surfaces that tolerate heat and moisture

The limitation is penetration. Steam kills what receives enough heat; it does not automatically eliminate insects hidden deep inside furniture, walls or inaccessible voids. Penn State notes that effectiveness drops when bed bugs are protected beneath certain materials.

Steam also introduces moisture. That makes careful application important around materials that can be damaged by water or heat.

How does Cryonite freezing work?

Cryonite-style treatment uses pressurized carbon dioxide to produce extremely cold CO₂ snow that rapidly freezes bed bugs on contact. The process leaves no conventional pesticide residue and produces little moisture, which makes it attractive for some sensitive items and locations.

The tradeoff is direct contact. Cornell’s IPM guidance notes that CO₂ snow does not penetrate mattress pleats and seams in the same way steam or heat can, so the nozzle must reach the insects. The force of the snow can also dislodge bugs before lethal exposure occurs.

That means freezing is best viewed as a targeted tool rather than a substitute for a complete bed bug control program.

The choice should follow the inspection rather than a blanket preference for one technology. The EPA says nonchemical methods sometimes control bed bugs alone, but doing so is often difficult, less effective and more resource-intensive than a comprehensive integrated approach.

If you are finding live bugs after repeated DIY attempts, stop adding treatments at random. A professional inspection can determine where the infestation is hiding and which combination of methods makes sense for the property. Orkin’s bed bug treatment plans are customized after inspection and may include heat or conventional treatments depending on the situation.

Are chemical-free bed bug treatments enough?

Usually, homeowners should not assume that killing visible bugs means the infestation is gone. Bed bugs hide in places that are difficult to inspect, and eggs can survive treatment if they do not receive sufficient exposure.

The EPA recommends continued inspection after treatment and notes that retreatment may be necessary. It also recommends measures such as mattress and box-spring encasements, reducing clutter and using interceptors to monitor activity.

A professional inspection matters because the treatment has to match the infestation’s location and extent. Orkin’s bed bug specialists describe their process as inspection, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up monitoring rather than relying on one application.

What Homeowners Should Not Try With Bed Bugs

Avoid improvised freezing or heating methods. The EPA specifically warns against using freezers, fire extinguishers or outdoor cold air as DIY freezing treatments, and warns that space heaters and fireplaces are dangerous and ineffective for whole-home heat treatment.

Homeowners should also avoid applying unregistered chemicals or household substances such as rubbing alcohol. The EPA reports that alcohol has caused house fires when used against bed bugs.

What should you do if you suspect bed bugs?

Start by confirming the pest. Bed bugs can be confused with other insects, and treating the wrong pest wastes time while the actual problem continues.

If bed bugs are confirmed, avoid moving mattresses, furniture, clothing or other belongings into untreated rooms. Launder and high-heat dry items when appropriate, reduce clutter and follow the preparation instructions provided by the pest professional. The EPA recommends drying bedding and clothing on high heat and keeping treated items sealed to prevent reinfestation.

For households seeking a chemical-free approach, steam and pressurized CO₂ freezing are legitimate professional tools. Their effectiveness depends on precise application and access to the places where bed bugs hide. Neither eliminates the need for inspection, preparation and monitoring.

Orkin offers no-obligation quotes for bed bug treatment. Schedule an assessment to determine what is happening in your home and what treatment options fit the infestation.
