There is plenty to do around The Liberty Inn in Caledon. The Headwaters region is filled with gorgeous hiking trails, cycling routes, country roads and the cutest small towns. But when you arrive at this tiny country inn with a Nordic vibe, you may find yourself wondering whether you actually want to go anywhere at all.
That is part of what makes The Liberty Inn so appealing. There are just five suites, that’s it. There is no chef-driven fancy restaurant, no busy lobby with squabbling kids, no resort schedule and no long list of amenities designed to keep oneself occupied. Instead, there is your suite, the surrounding countryside and a private Nordic spa reserved exclusively for guests. It is a remarkably simple formula, but after spending some time there, the simplicity starts to feel like the luxury.
The building itself dates to 1855, when it began life as the local post office. More than 160 years later, during the pandemic, a couple purchased the historic property and began transforming it into the intimate country retreat that would become The Liberty Inn. It opened its doors to guests in 2025.
We stayed in the Hawthorne Suite, the largest of the five, and it immediately felt more like the inside of a renovated country home than a hotel room. Designed with families in mind, it has plenty of space for a group, but it is also an especially comfortable choice for a couple who wants room to spread out and settle in.
The style is a mix of farmhouse chic and Nordic design, with natural materials, warm textures and an understated approach that never feels overly precious. The owner’s own pottery gives the space a personal touch. There is a strong sense of hygge, that Scandinavian idea of creating a warm, comfortable environment that makes you want to stay awhile. And the Hawthorne gives you plenty of opportunities to do exactly that.
There are two private decks, including one on the second storey directly off the primary bedroom. It became an easy place to start the morning with coffee and look out into the surrounding greenery. The suite also has a private infrared sauna, adding another wellness element without having to leave your room.
The Woodland Nordic Spa
The real centrepiece of the stay, however, is the Woodland Nordic Spa.
Guests reserve the spa in one-hour sessions, and the important distinction is that your hour is completely private. The space is yours. No strangers sharing the hot tub, no crowded sauna and no background chatter. Just you, the trees and a remarkably peaceful setting.
There is a cedar hot tub, a cold plunge and a cedar sauna, all tucked into the woodland. A small wood stove doubles as an outdoor fireplace, adding a warm glow to the area. Around you, the trees sway gently in the breeze, and the quiet is almost startling, particularly if you’re accustomed to the noise of the city.
You can move between the sauna, hot tub and cold plunge, sit beside the fire or simply take a few minutes to do absolutely nothing. The hour goes surprisingly quickly, although the experience doesn’t really end when you leave the spa.
When we returned to the suite, a small basket was hanging from the doorknob. Inside was an electrolyte mix, a thoughtful bit of after-spa care that we weren’t expecting. It was a small gesture, but one that captured what we liked about The Liberty Inn. The details aren’t necessarily extravagant. They are well considered.
Breakfast, then take your time
That attention continues in the suite. Breakfast is provided, but again, there is no buffet or restaurant involved. Instead, you’re given farm-fresh eggs, fruit and croissants that you bake yourself. You can get up whenever you want, make some coffee and craft a little breakfast in your own kitchen.
There are similar touches throughout the Hawthorne. The suite comes with a selection of high-quality skincare products and instructions for creating your own facial treatment, ideally after using the Nordic spa. Rather than booking another appointment or heading to a treatment room, you can simply continue the experience in the privacy of your own bathroom.
There are also diffusers here and there to crank up the relaxation even more.
Exploring Caledon
Of course, one of the pleasures of staying here is that you can leave the inn whenever you feel like it. Surrounding the property is a lovely garden and expansive lawn, with recliners scattered around for those afternoons when the best plan is simply to sit outside with a book or a drink and watch the day go by.
But if you do want to explore, there is plenty nearby. Forks of the Credit Provincial Park offers some of the area’s best hiking, with trails winding through the Credit River valley and surrounding escarpment landscape. A visit to Woodlot Farmstead Brewery is another worthwhile outing, particularly if you’re looking for somewhere relaxed to stop after a day outside.
The surrounding countryside is also dotted with historic hamlets. Alton is right on the doorstep, while other small communities make for an easy drive when you feel like getting out for a coffee, a meal or simply a wander. In the winter, the Caledon Ski Club is down the road.
The beauty of The Liberty Inn is that none of this feels in any way like a must. You can build a day around exploring Caledon, or you can spend most of it within the property itself.
And that, in the end, is what The Liberty Inn seems to understand particularly well. It doesn’t need a restaurant, a pool, a bar or a packed activity schedule to create a memorable getaway. In fact, adding all those things might undermine what makes it special.
With only five suites, the inn feels intimate from the outset. You aren’t one of hundreds of guests moving through a resort. You have your own space, your own pace and, for an hour at a time, your own private woodland spa.
Of course, you can leave. You can hike, cycle, explore Alton and the surrounding Headwaters region, visit nearby attractions or spend the day discovering what Caledon has to offer. There is plenty out there.
But after a morning on your deck, a leisurely breakfast, an hour among the trees in the Nordic spa and an afternoon curled up in a comfortable suite, you may discover that the biggest challenge of staying at The Liberty Inn isn’t finding something to do.
It’s finding a reason to leave.
