Terror in Resonance

Shinichirō Watanabe is best known for groundbreaking anime like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, but his Terror in Resonance is an overlooked entry that boasts excellent animation and writing. Teenage boys Nine and Twelve steal a nuclear bomb prototype and threaten to destroy Tokyo unless a cryptic riddle is solved. Although their motivations seem nefarious at first, Nine and Twelve are more interested in exposing a horrible government conspiracy that is connected to the time they spent at a medical experiment facility for children. Police detective Kenjiro Shibazaki must get to the bottom of this before time runs out, which is a very tall order, given the gravity of the threat.
Terror in Resonance makes wonderful use of tense pacing and a muted color palette to evoke a world on the verge of ruin. Shibazaki is both dedicated and competent, but he must challenge corrupt bureaucracy to understand what Nine and Twelve want the world to know. There’s a bait-and-switch aspect with tremendous payoff, but Terror in Resonance is at its most compelling when it explores psychological trauma and its devastating effects on the youth. Isolation feels like a death sentence in this gripping series, as it only breeds apathy and distrust, leaving no space for tender connections.

An inspired prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, Bates Motel follows a young Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) and his mother Norma (Vera Farmiga) prior to the events of the 1960 film. After Norma’s husband passes away, she buys a motel so that she and Norman can start afresh. Unfortunately, a traumatic event changes everything, leading to a murder investigation that our leads must prevent from progressing. Bates Motel is interested in the toxic, codependent relationship between mother and son, which is exacerbated by untreated mental illness and festering trauma.
While Psycho alternates its pacing to deliver edge-of-your-seat thrills, Bates Motel takes a languid approach to Norma and Norman’s engrossing character studies. Pre-existing notions based on the plot of Hitchcock’s film are challenged and reframed here, with the series oscillating between a moody thriller and soapy melodrama to keep things interesting. Small-town corruption is yet another focal point of the show, allowing intriguing (and morally dubious) characters to take center stage.
