Ontario’s fall colours are amaazing from the ground, but one old-fashioned fair near Toronto offers a much more dramatic vantage point: from high above the autumn scenery in a helicopter!
The Rockton World’s Fair returns to the tiny community of Rockton over Thanksgiving weekend. It’s nestled just outside Hamilton, about an hour’s drive from Toronto, and brings more than 170 years of rural tradition to the fairgrounds. Not only is it the largest fall fair in Ontario, but in recent years, it’s offered one of the more unusual ways to take in the fall colours: helicopter rides over the fairgrounds, giving visitors a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding countryside as the autumn foliage turns perfect shades of red, orange and gold.
The aerial views are only part of the draw. This year’s fair theme is “There’s No Place Like Home,” so expect a nostalgic country-fair mix of midway rides whirling in the background, barns full of animals, antique tractors, home-baked goods and, of course, classic fair food like fudge and candy apples (so, maybe nothing quite as crazy as what you’d find at the CNE).
Cars take over the Beverly Heritage Showring on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., before a final Sunday derby at 5:30 p.m. The events include everything from Demo Cross and compact-car competitions to the Mad Dog Junk Run and Sunday’s Figure 8 Championship.
For animal lovers, there are dairy, beef, goat, alpaca, sheep and horse shows throughout the weekend. The Ag-Alive Tent showcases farm animals and agricultural demos, and other attractions include antique tractors, a six-horse hitch display and even a rodeo.
Bring the whole family: Saturday includes a spelling bee, a milk moustache contest and a pie-eating contest before karaoke kicks off the evening. All activities takes place between midway rides, dozens of vendors, a craft sale and two stages of entertainment, so no one will get bored.
The Rockton World’s Fair runs Oct. 9-12 at 812 Old Highway 8 in Rockton, about a 1-hour drive from Toronto, with a midway-only preview night on Thursday, Oct. 8, from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday’s fairgrounds open from 4 to 10:30 p.m., followed by full days Saturday to Monday (midway rides open at 11 a.m. on the weekend).
General admission is $15 when purchased online through Oct. 8 or $18 at the gate, with parking included. Children five and under get in free | Tickets for kids six to 15 are $7 in advance or $10 at the gate.
