And, of course, because it is October, we are continuing our spooky season tradition! Read on for this week’s dedicated Halloween Highlights to help you get your scare on.
Here are our top three streaming highlights for the weekend:

Best New Movies and Shows on Netflix This Week

East of Eden (Limited Series)

Type: TV Series
Genre: Drama

Netflix’s highly anticipated, prestige adaptation of John Steinbeck’s magnum opus has finally arrived. This sweeping, multi-generational limited series explores the intertwined destinies of the Trask and Hamilton families in California’s Salinas Valley, echoing the biblical tale of Cain and Abel. Featuring breathtaking cinematography and incredible, emotionally charged performances, this is a massive, binge-worthy drama that has already swept to the top of the Netflix charts and picked up positive reviews across the board.

HALLOWEEN HIGHLIGHTS

The Menu (2022)

Type: Movie
Genre: Horror, Comedy, Thriller | Runtime: 1h 47m

If you prefer your horror with a side of biting, pitch-black satire, this culinary thriller is an absolute Michelin-star feast. Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult star as a young couple who travel to a remote, exclusive island to dine at a hyper-pretentious restaurant run by an enigmatic celebrity chef (a terrifyingly brilliant Ralph Fiennes). However, as the tasting menu progresses, it becomes abundantly clear that the chef has some shocking, violent surprises planned for his wealthy guests. It is sharp, hilarious, and deeply unsettling.

Crimson Peak (2015)

Type: Movie
Genre: Horror, Romance, Gothic | Runtime: 1h 59m

Master of monsters, Guillermo del Toro, directs this visually sumptuous, blood-soaked gothic romance. Mia Wasikowska stars as an aspiring author who is swept off her feet by a seductive English aristocrat (Tom Hiddleston) and moves into his decaying, isolated, and chillingly alive ancestral mansion. Co-starring Jessica Chastain as his fiercely overprotective sister, the film is a masterclass in production design and eerie, atmospheric dread. It’s the perfect gorgeous, spooky watch for a chilly October night.

On the TV Series charts, A Different World rocketed up the charts to steal the #1 crown with 76 points and clearly, Netflix is happy enough with the performance given it’s picked up a very quick renewal order. It barely held off our reality highlight, Wonka’s The Golden Ticket, which settled for a very impressive #2 (65 points), and The Great British Baking Show at #3 (58 points).

Last week’s champion, the terrifying Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, slipped to #4 but is still pulling in massive viewership (55 points) as we head deeper into October.
