A 3-night Calgary show is bringing contemporary dance to life in a whole new way

25 June 20262 Mins Read

Something new is taking shape in Calgary’s dance scene.

After more than a decade of collaborating in different forms, dancers Catherine Hayward and Sylvie Moquin are entering a new chapter with the launch of Strata & Co — a contemporary dance collective rooted in shared creation, lived experience, and the beautifully layered realities of balancing art, motherhood, and everything in between.

Now, they’re bringing their vision to the stage for the very first time with STRATA Creations, a world premiere that marks the debut of the company and introduces audiences to three original works created by the collective’s artists.

Taking place at DJD Dance Centre in Calgary from June 25 to 27, STRATA Creations invites audiences into an immersive evening of contemporary dance featuring 16 performers, original sound scores, live music, and layered visual design. Performances will take place Thursday, June 25, at 7 p.m., Friday, June 26, at 7 p.m. with a post-show Q&A, and Saturday, June 27, at 4 p.m.

The Shape She Takes by Catherine Hayward explores femininity, transformation, and creative survival through a lens of constant becoming. Unmasked by Tara Wilson peels back the layers of identity and expression, asking what lies beneath the surfaces we present to the world.

And last but not least, MOTHERLOAD by Sylvie Moquin offers a deeply felt reflection on womanhood, grief, resilience, and the strength found in community.

Together, these works create a full-sensory evening where movement, music, and storytelling come together to explore themes of womanhood, identity, and transformation. The production includes haze and loud music as part of its sensory design, pulling guests into the experience.

Performances will feature original music by Trish Evans and Robin Tufts, Edgardo Moreno, and Anthony Denaro (YNOT), with lighting design by Steve Isom, Calum Maunier, and Kris Mish. Guests can expect a runtime of approximately 110 minutes including intermission.

STRATA Creations marks an exciting new chapter for Calgary’s dance community, offering audiences the chance to experience the very first works from Strata & Co and witness the beginning of something new.

Grab your friends and make a night of it! Tickets are available for purchase via Ticket Tailor.
