A Canadian airline was ranked #2 in the world — and no, it’s not Air Canada

22 August 20253 Mins Read

A Canadian airline landed the number two spot on a global ranking of the best hybrid airlines for 2025 — and no, it wasn’t Air Canada. While Canada’s largest airline made the list overall, it was another homegrown carrier that ended up stealing the show.

Earlier this year, AirlineRatings.com scored airlines around the world on features like in-flight entertainment, seat comfort, and overall service. While big names from the U.S. and Europe made up much of the list, a Canadian airline soared past some major competition to claim the second spot globally.

The 2025 ranking focused on so-called hybrid airlines, which promise a mix of low-cost perks with some full-service comforts — think reclining seats, free non-alcoholic drinks, and a bit more legroom than your average economy seat.

To qualify as a hybrid, an airline needs to offer at least 30 inches of seat pitch in economy and those complimentary beverages, which rules out some of the ultra-budget players.

While airlines from the U.S. and Europe dominate the list, one Canadian carrier managed to edge out some of the biggest names in the industry to claim the number two spot worldwide.

So, which airline took the crown for Canada? It was none other than WestJet. The Calgary-based airline has been making big moves over the past few years, shifting from its budget roots into a more premium experience, especially on international routes. While economy passengers on shorter flights still get that budget-friendly experience, longer flights now have more perks.

And that shift seems to be working — WestJet ranked higher than airlines like Virgin Australia, British Airways, Delta, and United.

Air Canada also secured a spot on the list, coming in at number eight. While it didn’t place as high as its fellow Canadian carrier, it was still recognized for balancing affordability with solid service.

World’s best hybrid airlines

Here are the top hybrid airlines for 2025, according to AirlineRatings.com:

  1. JetBlue
  2. WestJet
  3. Virgin Australia
  4. Delta Airlines
  5. United
  6. American Airlines
  7. Lufthansa
  8. Air Canada
  9. LOT Polish Airlines
  10. TAP Portugal
  11. Alaska Airlines
  12. SWISS
  13. Avianca
  14. Iberia
  15. British Airways
  16. Finnair
  17. Austrian Airlines
  18. Hawaiian Airlines
  19. ITA Airways
  20. SAS

So, while Air Canada often grabs the headlines, WestJet is quietly proving it can compete — and even outshine — on the global stage.
