When thinking of Calgary’s most charming neighbourhoods, Kensington should definitely be at the top of the list. Located just off the Sunnyside LRT Station and within walking distance from downtown, this vibrant community has a little bit of everything.
From traversing the river pathway and browsing local shops to enjoying an evening brew, there’s never a dull moment in Calgary’s urban village. Whether you’re a recent arrival, a longtime local, or are visiting for the first time, here’s your guide to all the best places to shop, eat, drink, and hang out in Kensington.
Shopping
Find your next favourite ‘fit at Peacock Boutique, a trendy consignment store featuring the best of women’s fashion. With a variety of brands and price points, you’re sure to find something worth treasuring at a fraction of its original price.
Bookworms will want to check out Pages on Kensington, an adorable indie bookstore next to the Plaza. While the shelves are stocked full of current picks and trending faves, the book basement is where it’s at. There you’ll find hundreds of used books at lower prices. There’s no better way to bulk up your home library!
And if you’re a music lover, Hot Wax is a must. A Kensington staple since 1978, Hot Wax sells new and used records in every genre, and with a steady flow of new arrivals, there’s always something to discover.

Coffee
Whatever is on your agenda for the day, it’s likely improved upon with a cup of coffee in hand. Fortunately, there’s no shortage of options in Kensington.
AGGÜDO Coffee Roasters serves Ethiopian coffee that’s roasted in small batches in-house, and you’ll taste the difference in quality. Get the full experience by ordering Jebena coffee, made in a traditional Ethiopian pottery flask with the spices of your choice.
For an especially elevated coffee experience, check out The Roasterie, which boasts beans from a variety of regions and has the most authentic-tasting decaf brew around.
Or, enjoy your beverage amongst feline friends at Regal Cat Cafe, where you can hang out with the adoptable kitties for an additional fee.

Restaurants
Whatever you’re craving, there’s somewhere in Kensington that’s sure to satisfy.
Carnivores will love Hayden Block Smoke & Whiskey, best known for their Texas-style brisket, cornbread, and whiskey-based cocktails. The aroma of barbecue will summon you before you’ve even entered the door.
For something on the upscale side, try Osteria Chef’s Table, a white-tablecloth restaurant with French and Italian influences and an expansive wine list.
Or keep things on the affordable end at La Pasta Bar (formerly YYC Pastabar), which offers a range of authentic pasta dishes that are nearly all under $20. And most importantly, the Alfredo sauce actually has flavour — something I’ve found sorely lacking in other pasta places.

Drinks
Sometimes, a delicious drink is just the thing to finish off a perfect day. Or afternoon — I’m not judging.
Browse the eclectic wine list at Wine Bar, and pair the perfect sip with artisanal cheese, house-made charcuterie, or delectable fondue.
More of a beer person? Free House isn’t your average beer hall. It’s a cool beer hall. Twenty-four taps showcase local craft beer and rotate each week, and artisanal eats are available for when you get snacky.
And believe it or not, the best cocktail you find in Kensington just might come from a movie theatre. The Plaza’s historic site has a sidebar featuring a wide range of beverages, from in-house creations to classics, beers, and wine.

Activities
Kensington strikes a perfect balance of urban amenities and natural beauty, so be sure to take some time to enjoy the great outdoors. Stroll by the river, or lounge in Riley Park, one of Calgary’s most beloved outdoor areas.
If you’re into Escape Rooms, Trapped has six unique rooms full of twists and terrors. You and your crew will come out bonded for life or with some new gripes, but hey, at least you’ll have fun! (My group managed to escape a medieval prison-themed room in 2019, and I’ve been riding that high ever since.)
Or, swing by The Plaza to see what’s playing! The single-screen cinema is a piece of Calgary history, and the fun pink interior and retro theatre only add to the ambience.
