Did you know that one of the world’s coolest streets is right here in Vancouver? Yep, according to Time Out, Commercial Drive ranks in at number 5 on their 2024 list. And honestly, we get it.
Located in East Van and super easy to reach via SkyTrain or bus, The Drive is where you’ll find a seemingly endless array of unique and quirky stores, diverse culinary options, and blocks humming with character. It’s one of those rare places that’s held onto its soul over the years. You won’t find too many big chains here — instead, it’s long-standing community hubs and local gems that make it stand out.
Here’s how to make the most of your visit — from morning coffee to late-night cocktails and everything in between.
Shopping
There’s no better way to get a feel for Commercial Drive than by diving into its eclectic shopping scene.
Stop into The Only Vintage for some of the city’s best vintage pieces. Every week, the store sifts through thousands of pounds of clothes to bring customers the most unique finds!
Need a new read? Spend a while browsing the shelves at Pulp Fiction Books, where you’ll find a big selection of new, used, and out-of-print books.
For something a little different, hit up Raven’s Veil for handmade goods, one-of-a-kind artwork, crystals, tarot cards, spell books, and all kinds of mystical delights.

Coffee
Whether you like your coffee dark and strong or with oat milk and latte art, there’s a spot for you here!
Turks Coffee Bar is a local favourite for its friendly service, sweet treats, and reliably good coffee. It’s got a hipster edge, cool art on the cups, and a small but vibey outdoor patio — it really captures the energy of The Drive.
If you’re looking to switch up your usual coffee order, head to Hanoi Corner and try the signature egg coffee or iced banana matcha.
And, since Commercial Drive is home to Little Italy, you can’t leave without trying some authentic Italian espresso. Head to Cafe Calabria, the oldest Italian coffee house in Vancouver, for your fix. Be sure to order a few flavours of their delicious gelato while you’re at it.

Livia is a gem. While it is pretty popular, it’s a great place to work, grab brunch, or catch up with a friend.
The Burrow is a must-try, a vegetarian Mexican-inspired spot serving up everything you’d expect — enchiladas, burritos, tacos, etc. — along with some pretty creative dishes like the must-try Hicks Benny, cornbread muffins topped with guacamole, soft-poached eggs, pinto beans, and salsa.
And for a dinner that’s sure to hit the spot, check out Pepino’s Spaghetti House, a laid-back Italian eatery with fresh pasta dishes and Detroit-style pizzas.

Start your evening at Bar Corso, a sleek Italian bar with Negronis and small plates to match. Then, head to Mum’s The Word, a newer addition to the area with creative cocktails that are as fun as the space they’re served in (go on a Sunday for their killer all-day happy hour!).
Craft beer fan? St Augustine’s has over 60 rotating taps, many of which are from local microbreweries. Sample four different brews with a St Aug’s Paddle to find your favourite!

Activities
There’s more to The Drive than shopping, eating, and drinking — though that is pretty awesome in and of itself. If you’ve got time to explore, this stretch of East Van is full of artsy, outdoorsy, and delightfully offbeat things to do.
Head to the iconic Rio Theatre to catch a late-night indie flick, cult classic, or live sing-along. Bonus points for the buttered popcorn, beer on tap, and retro cinema vibes. The Cultch is also a must-visit — this arts and cultural hub showcases everything from contemporary dance to experimental theatre with local and emerging artists.
And if you need a little escape from the buzz of the block, Trout Lake offers a serene green space just blocks away. Bring a picnic and sit by the water, or simply stroll under the trees with a coffee in hand. On weekends from April to October, you’ll find a farmer’s market here that’s definitely worth checking out.
