We’ve seen John-Rhys Davies in plenty. He was Sallah in the Indiana Jones movies. (“Asps. Very Dangerous. You go first.”) He was Gimli in The Lord of the Rings films. (“No one tosses a dwarf!”)
But we’ve heard him plenty, too—perhaps without even knowing it. In addition to his work as Gimli, he voiced Treebeard in LOTR. He lent his pipes to characters in Justice League, SpongeBob SquarePants and Gargoyles. And in 2023, Davies narrated the award-winning podcast drama Scrooge: A Christmas Carol.
Well, the four-episode Scrooge (featuring Sean Astin, another Lord of the Rings alum, in the title role) is being re-released November 22 wherever you get your podcasts.
We’ve got a soft spot for A Christmas Carol here at Plugged In. We’ve reviewed plenty of cinematic adaptations (featuring everyone from an animated Jim Carrey to the Muppets), and we’ve talked about the story itself on a podcast (Episode 211, in case you’re interested). And—full disclosure—I’m a fan of the story’s original author, Charles Dickens. It seems to me that his work must be a real joy to read out loud.
I talked with John Rhys-Davies about Dickens, A Christmas Carol and Davies’ work, both in front of the camera and behind a microphone. He was a delight to chat with, and I hope you enjoy our conversation.
