A dreamy sunflower field just opened in the heart of Montreal and it’s free to explore

29 July 20252 Mins Read

An 18,000-square-foot flower field has returned to Montreal for another summer. And if you’re looking for a free, low-key activity that’s easy on the eyes (and your camera roll), this one should be on your list.

Located in the heart of Montreal’s Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough, La Prairie Louvain officially reopened on Friday, July 25, bringing a sea of sunflowers, wild grasses, perennials, and colourful annuals back to District Central. The sprawling space is made up of two wide paths you can walk through freely, with interpretive panels along the way that highlight the area’s transformation from an industrial zone to a more human-centred community space.

While the iconic sunflowers are back in bloom, they’re now joined by over a dozen other plant varieties, making this year’s version the most vibrant yet. The field will hit peak bloom around mid-August and stick around until the end of September, so there’s still plenty of time to plan a visit.

And if you get hungry afterward, La Prairie Louvain is just steps away from Aire Commune and several local restaurants.

Created in 2023 by the Société de développement commercial (SDC) District Central, La Prairie Louvain was designed to reflect the area’s commitment to sustainability and inclusivity.

Organizers of the community-driven initiative, which featured over 10,000 sunflowers in 2023, say they aim to “increase biodiversity, reduce the urban heat island effect and create a more stimulating living environment – in the short, medium and long term.” There are also plans to expand the green space in future years.

La Prairie Louvain

Price: Free

When: From now until the end of September

Address: 50–150 Louvain Ouest, Montreal, QC

Why You Need To Go: It’s a massive, free wildflower field with sunflowers and other native plants — perfect for a casual summer walk, photo session, or quiet outing in the city.
