A hilarious new musical inspired by an iconic Canadian snack is now in Alberta

8 July 20263 Mins Read

It’s not every day a snack inspires a musical, but that’s exactly what’s happening in Canmore this summer. The Cheezie Musical is a new production inspired by the story behind Hawkins Cheezies, the iconic Canadian snack.

The production recently debuted at the Carter-Ryan Theatre, giving audiences the chance to see how a simple idea inspired an unforgettable night of theatre.

Now let’s take a look at what you can expect from the quirky new production.

From snack aisle to stage lights

According to the Carter-Ryan Theatre, the musical takes audiences all the way back to 1957 in Bellevie, Ontario, where the iconic snack first began. The story follows Ron, Gord, Cheryl, and Jen as they navigate the early days of Hawkins Cheezies, giving audiences a behind-the-scenes look at the people and moments that have helped create the snack.

With plenty of comedy, catchy music and a story that’s as unique as the snack itself. And while the show is full of humour and cheesy moments, there’s a heartfelt story underneath it all, celebrating the people, determination and creativity behind the recognizable Canadian brand.

Plan your visit

Ready to see how the Canadian snack became a full-blown musical? The Cheezie Musical runs until Sunday, Aug. 16, at the Carter-Ryan Theatre in Canmore.

Performances take place Tuesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with additional Saturday and Sunday matinees at 3 p.m. The production is also suitable for all ages, so you can bring the whole family along.

Tickets start at $40.54, making it an affordable summer activity. And since it’s running for a limited time, you’ll want to grab your tickets now before they sell out. If you’re already planning a trip out to the Rockies this summer, this is an easy way to add a unique night of entertainment to your itinerary.

A musical about one of Canada’s most recognizable snacks might not have been on anyone’s 2026 bingo card, but that’s what makes this production so fun. So whether you’re a lifelong Hawkins Cheezies fan or just curious how the snack ended up on a theatre stage, this Canmore production is one you’ll be telling your friends about.

When: Running until Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026
Time: Tuesday to Thursday: 7:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday: 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Where: Carter-Ryan Theatre – 705 8th St., Calgary, Alta.
Cost: $40.54
