A historic Canadian TV show was set in this small B.C. town

2 June 20253 Mins Read

Just a 40-minute ferry ride away from West Vancouver is the gorgeous coastal town of Gibsons, best known as the location behind CBC’s longest-running show, The Beachcombers. In addition to the many scenic islands and beaches visitors have to uncover, they can check out iconic filming locations like the yellow and blue Molly’s Reach Restaurant, which still operates today.

The original jet boat from the series was also returned to its rightful home in Gibsons in August 2024, following a 10-year search.

Historic harbour and beaches

Filled with heritage buildings and coastal charm, Gibsons Landing is a great place to kick off your Sunshine Coast adventures. Surrounded by views of Howe Sound, the coastal mountains, and Keats Island, the waterfront harbour area has plenty of views to take in.

The Landing is “easily walkable” with plenty of shops, restaurants, museums, and art galleries to peruse during your next visit.

Visitors strolling down the harbour from the public market can enjoy access to several nearby parks and beaches, including the popular Armours Beach — a local favourite for over 100 years. Here, visitors can swim in the beautiful waters of Howe Sound, jump off a public dock, or simply unwind and take in the views of Keats Island.

Keats and Gambier Islands

Those who want to explore this island themselves can paddle directly there, or take a water taxi or ferry from Gibsons. Situated within the traditional territory of the Skwxwú7mesh Nation, Keats Island is mostly a getaway destination for those with summer cabins, but there is a beautiful marine park for visitors to explore via paddleboard, kayak, or canoe, and an incredible view of Howe Sound in front of you.

Gambier Island is the largest in Howe Sound, rewarding hikers who brave Mt. Artaban with spectacular views of the surrounding waters and coastal forest. There’s also a rugged marine park, seasonal farmers market, and regular pop-up art events from the talented Artists of Gambier Island.

Note that amenities and facilities on both islands are very limited, so come prepared with your own snacks and drinking water if you want to spend the day at either.

Looking for even more outdoor fun? Consider popping by one of the many beaches and parks near Gibsons Landing, including Bonniebrook, Georgia, Franklin, and Hopkins Landing beaches, and a collect-hold-release aquarium.

The quaint small town can be accessed via ferry from the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal to the Langdale Ferry Terminal, which is just 10 minutes away from Gibsons.

How to get there: Drive 20 minutes from Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver via BC-1A/BC-99 N and Trans-Canada Highway/BC-1 W/BC-99 N, then take a ferry to Langdale and drive 10 minutes to Gibsons.
