A magical boardwalk winds through an ancient forest on an island in Alberta

7 May 20252 Mins Read

We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it 100 more times: Wild Rose Country has some of the most exciting things to do, incredible things to see, and a ton of scenic places to forget about the hustle and bustle of big city life.

Among them? The Miyo Mahkamikisi Trail at Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park in Alberta.

A walk to remember

With a name that directly translates to “Good Journey,” a stroll on the Miyo Mahkamikisi Trail is almost guaranteed to be an enjoyable one.

Located northeast of Edmonton, this enchanting route winds through one of the few Winston Churchill Provincial Park islands.

Surrounded by a towering old-growth forest, this one-kilometre boardwalk is short but sweet.

Here, visitors are encouraged to take things slow, look up at the trees, and keep an eagle eye open for wildlife.

With over 230 species of birds, there is no shortage of adorable creatures to watch and take photos of, but there are also four-legged critters and fish.

Make it a day trip or a weekend getaway

Need to cool off after your magical nature walk?

There are so many other ways to explore the area.

If you’d like to extend your stay, there’s also a campground with cozy cabins, tipis, and room for RVS, tents, and trailers, but that’s hardly the best part.

There is also a Winston Churchill Provincial Park on the island, where you can go swimming, get your adrenaline pumping with some wild water sports and see some “ah-mazing” sunsets.

As always, check any advisories before heading out, and pack some goodies.

While some things, like canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards, are available to rent, you’ll have to bring your own snacks.

You’ll definitely work up an appetite, and you won’t want to miss a beat.

This Alberta boardwalk and the park itself are truly magical — enjoy and happy adventuring!
