A massive, mixed-use fieldhouse and library is coming to Calgary in 2027

10 September 20253 Mins Read

Construction has just begun on a new combined-use fieldhouse and library in southwest Calgary.

The Belmont Fieldhouse and Library will be located at the intersection of 210th Avenue and Creekside Boulevard SW, weighing in at a whopping 118,000 square feet.

The building is designed to be a mixed-use community and recreation space, complete with an artificial turf field, viewing areas, and an adjacent 10,000 square foot library.

The new Calgary Public Library will unveil a children’s area, collection shelving, an open reading area, meeting rooms, and an outdoor learning space to the public.

The City of Calgary hopes that the $71.8-million facility will become a vibrant focal point of year-round community activity.

What to expect

Mayor Jyoti Gondek recognized the need for additional library and recreation services. Major influxes to the city’s population in recent years have created more demand for communal spaces.

“As our city expands and continues to welcome new Calgarians, the need for additional library and recreation spaces has reached a critical point,” she said in a press release.

The facility has been described as a transformative and forward-thinking solution that will provide much-needed amenities to Calgary’s growing southwest communities.

The hybrid sports and library facility will deliver a wide range of programs to support the social, recreational, and learning needs of Calgarians.

Long-term investment in recreation infrastructure

The new Belmont Fieldhouse was approved in 2021 as part of an effort to boost recreation infrastructure in underserved Calgary communities.

It’s also part of a long-term vision for the city called GamePLAN, which seeks to expand high-quality public recreation infrastructure across Calgary.

Users of the City of Calgary’s recreation facilities have increasingly struggled to access services in the past few years. Aging infrastructure at the City’s pool, recreation, and leisure centres has led to forced closures and renovations in communities like Inglewood, Canyon Meadows, and Brentwood.

Through communication with city residents, Council has identified an urgent need for additional recreational facilities, including high-quality indoor fields.

“Calgary continues to fall short of the standard for bookable field hours, and this facility is an important step in closing that gap,” said Heather Johnson, director of recreation and social programs, in a press release.

Belmont Fieldhouse marks the seventh of 13 fieldhouses envisioned in GamePLAN, identifying this as a key area for continued investment.

The Belmont Fieldhouse will officially open in 2027, and we can’t wait to take advantage of its world-class facility features!
