A new ‘Murdoch Mysteries’ episode is set at the Calgary Stampede

19 August 20253 Mins Read

A new Murdoch Mysteries episode is in the works, and it’s set right here in Alberta.

Filmed near Turner Valley in scenic Kananaskis country, the episode promises to deliver plenty of cowboys, rodeo action, and intrigue.

It will be set at the historic 1912 Calgary Stampede, the first iteration of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.

Rooted in history

This is the 19th season of CBC’s longstanding show, Murdoch Mysteries. Beginning in 1895, the critically acclaimed show follows lead detective Murdoch on his investigations into local murder mysteries. The show has a historical feel, set at the turn of the 20th century with plenty of top hats and trimmings.

The new episode, filmed near Calgary, will be set at the historic 1912 Calgary Stampede. Detective William Murdoch and Inspector Thomas Brackenreid will be bound for the rodeo on a relaxing vacation, but will quickly be roped into a mysterious death.

Filming for the Calgary Stampede-themed episode took place over three days in Alberta’s picturesque Turner Valley.

There were more than 80 local Alberta workers on set, including grips, camera technicians, sound mixers, and designers.

Alberta crew members have plenty of experience, with a longstanding history of filming Westerns in and around the province, including Oscar-winners Brokeback Mountain, The Revenant and Legends of the Fall.

With rolling prairie grassland and wide open sky, Kananaskis is the perfect location to hold a convincing 20th-century Calgary Stampede.

Convincing costumes

It took wrangling together plenty of costumes to achieve the weathered look of clothing worn by cowboys and cowgirls at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. But as actors on horseback careened in and off screen, it was plenty convincing.

Costume Designer Joanna Syrokomla has been with Murdoch since season 12. On set, Syrokomla and her team have worked to match an authentic 20th-century cowboy’s wardrobe.

As the episode will take place at the very first Stampede, getting the feel of the event right takes expert skill and tailoring to the craft.

You can expect fur-lined chaps, suede dusters, and sun-worn leather in the looks shown by actors on-screen.

There’s bound to be barrels of Alberta-themed easter eggs in the new episode of Murdoch Mysteries to keep an eye out for.

While you can’t go back in time to the 20th-century rodeo, this might be the next best thing. We can’t wait to tune in!
