A new R-rated Batman movie trilogy begins this year

Pretty much all of the members of the Dark Knight’s rogues gallery are coming out to play

Batman is one of the most ubiquitous superheroes in cinema, but from Tim Burton’s Batman in 1989 to Matt Reeves’ The Batman in 2022, his films are almost always PG-13. Batman doesn’t kill, and when his villains do, the gore has been minimized to keep stories of the Dark Knight from getting too dark. But a new trilogy coming soon is changing that, earning an R rating with some really messy deaths.

Warner Bros. Entertainment released the first trailer for the Batman: Knightfall Trilogy on June 23, when the first film in the series, Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall, premiered at the Annecy Festival. The trilogy is a faithful adaptation of the three-part comics arc that ran from 1993 to 1994, which introduced the steroid-enhanced supervillain Bane. Part of Bane’s plan to defeat Batman involves an attack on Arkham Asylum, so the storyline unleashed pretty much all of Batman’s rogue’s gallery on Gotham.

Bane has proven a tricky character to adapt. He was treated as a joke in Joel Schumacher’s 1997 film Batman & Robin. Christopher Nolan used some elements of Knightfall in The Dark Knight Rises, but the final film in The Dark Knight trilogy undermined him to focus more on Talia al Ghul and Catwoman. Knightfall director Jeff Wamester aims to do Bane justice by using the R rating to let him become a real monster who rips people apart. Studio Mir brings the animated carnage to life with the same panache they’ve shown in Devil May Cry.

Knightfall is coming out this year, though the release date hasn’t been announced. You probably won’t have to wait long for the rest of the trilogy. The trailer focuses on the events of the first movie, but also contains elements from future films including Nightwing in action and Batman’s new suit after his big fight with Bain. Warner Bros. often takes multiple films to handle big comic events, but releases them in pretty short succession. The latest example is the Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy, which was released in 2024 with three-month gaps between the films.
