A ‘phone-free’ party series is taking over Toronto this summer

17 June 20253 Mins Read

There’s a new wave of parties happening in Toronto, and phones are not allowed. The events and apparel company Before the Internet hosts retro-inspired “Phone-free” events across the city, and if you’re interested in attending, here’s what to know.

Can you remember a time when you didn’t worry about being caught in an embarrassing moment or glued to your phone on a night out? It’s easy to see why some people wish they’d come of age in the ’90s, when phones were landlines and “The Internet” might’ve sounded more like the name of a nightclub than a place you’d spend your whole evening.

This event collective aims to bring much of that element back through a series of “phone-free events.”

“From New-Age Wellness Experiences to Old-School Parties, we don’t care how you come together — just that you leave with a story to tell,” shares organizers in a post. “All our events are phone-free! Because the best memories are made living in the moment.”

And we agree. The collective recently held an event at Toronto’s largest outdoor patio, RendezViews, kicking it back to 1969. Though I unfortunately missed that experience, according to Before the Internet, more are set for July and August.

“We are confident that the growing rates of loneliness are directly linked to technology addiction. At the same time, we believe our generation is craving something more-something real,” shares the organizers.

“This is why we’re encouraging people to put their phones down and live in the moment. We aim to build a community through our events and apparel, while fostering awareness about the impact of tech addiction and loneliness.”

So if you’re looking to make real memories, connect face-to-face, and relive the magic of a simpler time, this might be your sign. With more phone-free parties and nostalgic experiences set to drop closer to summer, you’ll want to stay tuned.

Follow Before the Internet on social media to be the first to know when the next throwback event hits Toronto. But don’t worry, we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop.
