As it turns out, the name Strange Fellows Brewing not only refers to a beloved East Vancouver brewery, but the haunting story behind the space it occupies. And a new haunted house experience is brewing to commemorate it.
Haunting local lore
Up until 1917, False Creek extended eastward, where Clark Drive and Strange Fellows now stand. Almost twenty years earlier, in the fall of 1899, the East Bridge that crossed the marshy east end of False Creek collapsed, sending nine people to their untimely deaths. This includes a team of brewers en route to deliver beer to Gassy Jack’s infamous saloon in Gastown.
“We have begun to notice telltale signs of an impending pestilence,” shares the brewery in a cheeky new announcement. “Strange shadows in the cellar, sudden noises in the tank farm, and inexplicable puddles of blood in the cooler.” As part of the establishment’s tribute to this piece of local history and the start of spooky season, the team has announced that Strange Fellows will soon transform into “Vancouver’s only haunted brewhouse.”
Vancouver’s only haunted brewhouse
According to the brewery, the drowned False Creek Brewers will soon rise from their watery graves to “brew for their friends from the other side,” only you might just find yourself a part of the ingredient list if you’re not careful.
Starting on Oct. 23, brewery-goers can enjoy a haunted attraction like no other.
Now in its third year, “Dead Fellows” brings all there is to love about spooky season to the forefront. The haunting decorations and special effects, the costumed, no-contact actors lurking in every corner, and a handful of surprises to keep you on your toes.
Visitors will also have plenty of spooky foods and drinks to tide them over in between scares. The brewery’s seasonal dark lager, PSYCHOPOMP, is back, named for the guide to the afterlife. Hopefully, you’ll get to enjoy it in this one!
This year, guests can expect an all-new walkthrough haunted house experience that’s teeming with creepy decor and jump scares.
So as summer bleeds into fall, beware of those “with vengeance in their black hearts,” as the brewery says. Consider dropping by for an otherworldly beer and a good scare!
