A scenic hiking trail in Ontario leads to stunning views of a 55-metre cascade

27 May 20253 Mins Read

Ready for some sightseeing? There’s a scenic Ontario hiking trail that guides you along a riverside path and up close to a 55-metre cascade. Make your way to A.Y. Jackson Lookout for this thrilling sight.

It is located in the Sudbury region, offering a self-guided experience full of curiosity, awe, and a bit of history.

Exploring A.Y. Jackson Lookout

The A.Y. Jackson Trail is a short, 3 km hiking trail that offers a scenic view of High Falls that cascade into the Sudbury Basin, according to Ontario Trails.

Though there are technically three trails, they all interconnect.

According to Discover Sudbury, the lookout point is named after one of Canada’s Group of Seven artists, A.Y. Jackson, who was captivated by the falls. Not only was it their favourite, but it was also a popular spot.

“Plunging 55 m in one gorgeous cascade, High Falls on the Onaping River captured the heart of Group of Seven artist A.Y. Jackson and is a favourite outing for locals and tourists alike,” they add.

The self-guided adventure begins on the beautiful 1 km riverside trail.

Here’s where you can see the falls from afar, right on the A.Y. Jackson Lookout spot. Continue along the trail to a bridge that goes across the top of the falls and into a 2 km loop.

Per Ontario Trails, this trail “is developed and supported through the efforts of the Rainbow Routes Trail Association, a not-for-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the development and promotion of non-motorized trails generally, and the Trans Canada Trail in particular for the City of Greater Sudbury.”

After you finish your trail adventure, you can head back to the main starting point and use the washroom and picnic facilities if needed.

This is a great outdoor experience that’ll leave you in awe; at least it did for A.Y. Jackson.
