A secret garden party is coming to one of Vancouver’s most historic hidden gems

2 July 20253 Mins Read

Attention, Bridgerton lovers! One of Vancouver’s most historic, storied estates is transforming for a secret garden party that feels straight out of the series. This July, the iconic Hycroft Estate will open its moss-clad gates, offering visitors the chance to step inside its remarkable gardens and Edwardian-era mansion.

Unparalleled access to an iconic landmark

At this “rare public event,” guests will have unparalleled access to the two-acre hidden gem, situated in the heart of Vancouver’s Shaughnessy neighbourhood. They’ll be greeted with a welcome beverage from Renaissance Wine, followed by light bites and special tastings by Cedar Creek Wines of Mark Anthony Wine and Spirits.

There will also be a cash bar where visitors can purchase additional sips as they roam the stunning gardens.

“As one of the first places in Vancouver to be designated as a significant heritage resource by the City of Vancouver, the history and legacy of the Hycroft estate and gardens are unparalleled,” says Edith Hewitt from the Hycroft Heritage Preservation Foundation. “Today, we are thrilled to be able to share our cherished estate with the public during our inaugural Hycroft Secret Garden Party, with all proceeds of the event going towards preserving this exemplary property.”

Designed by 20th-century architects and landscapers, Hycroft was built in 1911 by General Alexander McRae as a massive family residence. During the Second World War, the estate was gifted to the Canadian government.

Today, the University Women’s Club of Vancouver is the proud owner and steward of this fascinating property. Established in 1907, this determined group of women worked to raise the funds to purchase the Hycroft themselves in 1962, so that the property could be used as their clubhouse and remain preserved for generations to come.

At the time, women could not qualify for a bank loan or mortgage, so this accomplishment was especially significant!

The club will offer guided tours of the mansion on the day of the garden party, led by knowledgeable volunteers and members. Guests are also encouraged to explore the gardens at their leisure.

Event details

In addition to sips and garden strolls, the event will feature live music and poetry, rare vintage cars from the Vintage Car Club of Canada, floral arrangement demos by Lila Yee, and historic fashion displays by the Museum of Original Costume.

The 19+ Hycroft Secret Garden Party will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2025, with limited tickets available online for $48 per person.

Step into an era of the past and don your dreamiest Bridgerton-inspired attire.

When: Sunday, July 13, 2025
Time: 2 to 6 p.m.
Where: 1489 McRae Ave.
Cost: $48 per person
