Are you someone who loves a good walk? Leave the marathons to other people and lace up your running shoes for something a little less… sweaty. There’s a free festival coming to Calgary this spring that will have walking tours springing up all over the city.
Jane’s Walk is an annual festival of community-led walking conversations that takes place on the first weekend of May every year. The event is inspired by urbanist and writer Jane Jacobs and takes place across hundreds of cities around the world.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Jane’s Walk walking tours in Calgary.
How does it work?
Connect with your neighbours in a whole new way!
This global walking festival is inspired by the work of Jane Jacobs. The event is all about bringing neighbours together to share stories, discover new spots, and connect with their community.
Who’s Jane?
Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) was an urbanist and activist who wrote extensively about a new, community-based approach to city building. One of her core beliefs was that people need to get out and walk in their city to observe others, create community, and foster a sense of belonging.
A quote from her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities states, “Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.”
It’s a pretty cool idea, right?
How can you join a walking tour?
All walking tours are run by volunteers. So if you’re passionate about your neighbourhood and its history, you can lead a walk yourself!
If you’d rather just participate this year, there are a ton of different walking tours to choose from. Browse the Eventbrite page to find something in your community or in a Calgary neighbourhood you know and love.
