A sneak peek of what the TTC’s new Line 2 trains look like

15 January 20263 Mins Read

Toronto’s beloved transit system is inching closer to finally getting a comfortable upgrade on Line 2 with brand-new trains. The Ontario government revealed a first look at what the new TTC Line 2 trains will look like, and here’s what you should know.

The provincial government has a plan to “protect Ontario’s economic security and build a province that is more competitive, more resilient and more self-reliant.”

High-capacity trains for Line 2

So with that, the Ontario government announced on Thursday that its 55 new Line 2 subway trains will be made from 55 per cent Canadian content. This is about a 30 per cent increase from what was originally announced.

“Line 2 is getting a major boost for the people who ride it every day,” said Mayor Olivia Chow.

“We applaud the provincial and federal governments for helping keep transit reliable for Torontonians. These new trains mean shorter waits, more reliable trips, and better connections across the city. We are working to deliver a more affordable, safe and caring city for Torontonians.”

According to the province, funding for this project will support 946 Canadian jobs. This includes 285 at Alstom’s Ontario facilities, with 240 in Thunder Bay, 30 in Kingston and 15 in Toronto.

If you’re like the millions of Torontonians who have had the pleasure of riding on Line 2, you may be thinking, “It’s about time.” And you’re right. The current 30-year-old Line 2 trains are nearing the end of their expected life, so if they continue to operate, the cost to maintain them would increase significantly.

The new high-capacity trains will be able to carry up to 1,100 passengers each, as demand grows. According to the province, daily ridership is expected to reach 661,000 by 2041.

Now that Line 6 is finally complete, all eyes are set on Line 2.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming trains?
