A village surrounded by quartzite cliffs is Ontario’s ‘amazing little secret’

13 May 20253 Mins Read

Here’s a hidden escape in Ontario that you have to visit this season. Surrounded by white quartzite cliffs and pink granite rock is the village of Killarney, a quintessential northern gateway.

According to the Municipality of Killarney, the village is described as “Ontario’s amazing little secret.”

Exploring Killarney

This all-season destination is lovely in any weather, but a must for the spring season. It’s so beautiful that it has even inspired artists like the Group of Seven in their works of art.

From the white quartzite of the La Cloche Mountains to the pink granite ridges and the indigo blue of the lakes, you’ll witness a full spectrum of colours throughout the year.

And not to mention its lush green forests that are simply begging to be explored.

The village has a charming small-town atmosphere, and it welcomes over 100,000 visitors every year, according to the Municipality. But Killarney itself is pretty large, considering both Killarney Provincial Park and French River Provincial Park are found within its boundaries.

Its waterfront is an attractive spot for boaters who wish to travel the bay, too.

You’ll also find cottages scattered around various lakes and rivers, occupied by hundreds of seasonal residents. In the summer, it’s a popular destination.

But to truly appreciate the surrounding nature, you’ll have to lace up your hiking boots and hit the trails. One spot to explore is the French River Delta. This portion of land and water remains a mysterious wilderness that’s scarcely changed for centuries.

According to Ontario Parks, Georgian Bay coastal kayaking is available through the French River Delta.

And at night, the Delta transforms into a stargazer’s paradise, offering a true northern Canadian wilderness experience.

Killarney is also a thriving destination for campers, eco-tourists, and adventurers eager to hike, canoe, and kayak.

Though it’s about a five-hour drive from Toronto, it’s worth the road trip. You’ll see why it’s Ontario’s most breathtaking secret.
