A whimsical water lantern festival is coming to Calgary this summer

7 July 20252 Mins Read

The days are long and the nights are hotter. Summer is in full swing, and this August, those looking for a magical way to spend an evening can check out the Water Lantern Festival in Calgary.

What to expect

Described as a community event that “encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to come together for a night of love and laughter,” this festival is not one to be missed.

The evening begins with food trucks and live music at Waterfront Park, just before the sun starts to set.

Guests are encouraged to arrive with blankets, bug spray, camping chairs, and a camera, then they can grab a spot and a bite to eat before settling in to decorate a lantern.

Upon arrival, everyone will receive a bag with everything that they’ll need to participate, including markers, a lantern, and an LED candle.

At this point, you’ll be able to write a wish, motto, mantra, or simply draw a picture on your lamp.

Between 9 and 10 p.m., you’ll launch your light and watch it float along the water with the others.

Interested? General admission starts at $42, but don’t hesitate to purchase. Passes are on sale now and will go quickly.

Tickets, as we mentioned, will give you access to the event, all the goodies, plus cleanup at the end, in case you were wondering what happens afterward.

“Water Lantern Festival is designed with the environment in mind,” they write on their website.

“Unlike sky lantern festivals, our lanterns stay close and are easy to retrieve. After each event, our team collects every lantern and even cleans up surrounding trash to leave the space cleaner than we found it.”

So, check it out, Calgary.

From personal experience, this is not a sight that you’ll soon forget, though we’d recommend arriving early because parking is limited.

Enjoy, and happy viewing. It’s a beaut!

When: Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025
Time: 6 to 10 p.m.
Where: 5225 101st St. NW, Calgary
Admission: $42+
