A24’s Elden Ring movie is now officially one step closer to reality. According to a crew member who worked on director Alex Garland’s live-action adaptation of the 2022 game, filming has nearly wrapped on the Elden Ring movie after nearly four months. But the wait for the final product will be a long one — Elden Ring isn’t slated to arrive in movie theaters until 2028.
Prop maker Sean Schofield, who has worked on productions such as The Witcher and The Rings of Power, posted on his Instagram account news of the film’s status on Thursday. Schofield uploaded a photo of what appears to be a wrap gift and a thank-you note to cast and crew signed by Garland and by producers Allon Reich, Matthew Penry-Davey, Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, and Charlie Reed.
“Dream job to end all dream jobs,” Schofield wrote. “6 solid months of blood, sweat and tears making the coolest stuff ever, working alongside the best of the best. Can’t share anything else for a very long time, but I couldn’t be more proud of what we did.”
Schofield hasn’t posted any of his work from Elden Ring on his personal account, though fans of the game have gotten sneak peeks at game-accurate props, thanks to photos from the set. Over the past few months, Elden Ring fans and paparazzi have snapped pics of shooting locations and actors on set. We’ve seen photos of characters such as Queen Marika, the Dung Eater, and Sorcerer Rogier, as well as sets that stand in for Stormveil Castle and Liurnia of the Lakes.
Now Elden Ring enters post-production, and the film’s far-off release date indicates there’s plenty of VFX work still to be done. Polygon has reached out to A24 to confirm the movie’s production status and will update when the company responds.
A24 and game publisher Bandai Namco announced the Elden Ring adaptation in May 2025. Alex Garland, the writer-director behind Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Civil War — and a fan of FromSoftware’s game — is helming the film.
Elden Ring players should have faith in Garland, who says he’s completed the game some seven times over, and has similar experience with FromSoftware’s Dark Souls. Garland is reportedly so passionate about the project that he wrote a 160-page script on spec, with 40 pages of “additional imagery,” that he used to convince FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki to let him adapt Elden Ring. The filmmaker has also previously adapted a broad range of material, writing the screenplays for Never Let Me Go, Annihilation, and Dredd based on existing works.
Elden Ring will be released on March 3, 2028. The confirmed cast thus far is:
