Abby Elliott Breaks Down Her 'Resolve' With Jamie Lee Curtis in 'The Bear’ (Exclusive)

26 June 20253 Mins Read

SPOILER ALERT!The following includes details of major events from The Bear Season 4. Please do not read further if you do not intend to know anything about the new season of the FX on Hulu series.

Jamie Lee Curtisis back for Season 4 of The Bear. And this time, she’s figured out how to move forward with some of her family.

Abby Elliott, who plays Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto, and Donna Berzatto, played by Curtis, shared an emotional experience last season that led them to a better place for the recently-released batch of episodes for the FX on Hulu dramedy.

“Jamie is back, and she’s back as Donna,” Elliott told Parade shortly before the drop of the new season. “And, yeah, I mean, I think now she’s had this – I wouldn’t say reconciliation with Sugar. But it’s a resolve of some sort after they shared this experience of Sugar giving birth. And so they’re maybe in a different place, and we see this in Season 2. She’s trying. She’s putting the work in and attempting.”

During Season 3, Sugar does her best to get a hold of her family and employees who are busy at the restaurant during dinner and are not answering. So she calls Donna as a last resort, who meets her in the hospital’s parking lot. She eventually gives birth alongside Donna, who didn’t even know about her daughter’s pregnancy, in an episode titled “Ice Chips,” which was loosely based on Elliott’s real-life delivery of her son.

“I got to do this beautiful episode with Jamie Lee Curtis where I’m giving birth,” Elliott shares. “And we got to delve into their trauma and their relationship. And we got to see Tina go home to her husband and struggle and how she came to work at the sandwich shop. And all of those stories really keep our audience engaged, I think. I really think it’s just like, a testament to Chris’s [Storer] beautiful directing.”

Although their on-screen relationship was complicated, off-screen is a totally different story. In fact, Elliott jokes that if she were to give birth again, she’d gladly take her co-star in the delivery room with her again, just not in character.

“I think I need her next to me now!” Elliott laughs. “Not as Donna, though, as her. Because she’s the most supportive and sweet person. That is something that I will never forget. We really did it in two takes. It was really fast, and we had full trust in each other. And having worked with her on the ‘Fishes’ Episode in Season 2, I really felt like I could trust her.”

Season 4 of The Bear is streaming now on FX on Hulu.
