Acclaimed fantasy manga The Bugle Call is getting an anime in 2027

30 June 20263 Mins Read

Fantasy fans continue to feast. CyberAgent announced that Mozuku Sora and Higoro Tōmori’s manga The Bugle Call: Song of War is getting a 2027 anime adaptation from CA Soa studio. The reveal came alongside a key visual and a wordless teaser trailer showcasing the series’ score.

The Bugle Call: Song of War manga began in 2022 in Shueisha’s Jump Square magazine and has been collected in 13 volumes. It’s returning from a brief hiatus in July in Jump SQ.Rise. The series has been generally praised for its striking artwork and tone, winning an endorsement from the great Makoto Yukimura, the creator of Vinland Saga and Planetes. Viz Media, which publishes The Bugle Call in English, offers the following description of the series:

A young bugler with supernatural powers is swept up into an epic struggle for the fate of the world. Cry havoc and sound the song of war!

In Arboral Year 1294, the world is dominated by nine massive towers known as the Spires—remnants of an advanced civilization, they are filled with lost secrets and powerful knowledge that nations struggle to possess. Luca is a bugler in a mercenary company who wants nothing more than to leave the battlefield behind and become a true musician, a maestro. But marked as one of the enigmatic Branch-hexed, and gifted with the strange ability to see the sound of his instrument, Luca finds himself drawn reluctantly into a war of epic proportions!

The staff is as follows: Shinya Watada, who helmed the excellent music-focused series Rock is a Lady’s Modesty, will direct; Hitomi Koto (Sparks of Tomorrow) is the composer; Michihiro Tsuchiya (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Akane Banashi, Major) will handle series composition; Michinori Chiba (Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-blooded Orphans, SK8 the Infinity) is the character designer; and Hiroshi Arisawa is a key animator (Attack on Titan, Planetes). This will be the first anime from CyberAgent’s newly founded CA Soa studio.

These last few years, we’ve been spoiled with beautifully realized adaptations of fantasy manga like Witch Hat Atelier, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and Delicious in Dungeon. The popularity of these series has further proven there’s an appetite for sword battles and spell casting devoid of isekai elements — that’s not to mention slightly more under-the-radar picks like Sentenced to Be a Hero or Ranking of Kings, as well. Hopefully, The Bugle Call will prove a worthy addition to the list.
