AHLA Report Shows Travelers Adjusting Summer Plans Amid Rising Expenses

A new survey from the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) finds that 56% of Americans plan to take a summer trip in 2026, even as 57% say travel is more expensive than last year. Among those feeling the impact of higher prices, 69% say a summer vacation remains important.

The survey shows that travelers are modifying their plans rather than canceling vacations. Many are choosing destinations closer to home, opting for road trips instead of flying, and selecting more affordable locations. Respondents indicated a preference for hotels offering amenities such as complimentary breakfast and loyalty rewards to help offset increased travel costs.

When asked about cost-saving measures, respondents reported reducing spending on shopping (43%), dining out (39%), and entertainment (26%) before cutting back on hotel accommodations (24%). Hotel stays remain a priority for many travelers, even as they seek to manage expenses.

The survey also found that most people who stayed in a hotel last year are booking hotel stays again this year, with a focus on value and additional amenities.

The AHLA survey highlights a trend toward regional travel, with many Americans choosing to drive rather than fly and selecting destinations that are more affordable or closer to home.
