Class is officially back in session! If you’ve been looking for a nostalgic, feel-good sitcom binge, you’re in luck. Netflix United States has just picked up both seasons of the canceled ABC comedy Schooled.
Set in the 1990s, Schooled serves as a direct spin-off to the smash-hit family sitcom The Goldbergs. The series follows the quirky faculty of William Penn Academy, led by a hilarious cast of familiar faces. AJ Michalka reprises her Goldbergs role as Lainey Lewis, who returns to her old stomping grounds to take a job as the school’s new music teacher. She’s joined by comedy veteran Tim Meadows as the endlessly patient Principal Glascott, Bryan Callen as the overly intense Coach Mellor, and Brett Dier as the enthusiastic, new-age teacher C.B.
The series originally aired on ABC for two seasons between 2019 and 2020, producing 34 episodes before it was ultimately canceled. Now, like so many canceled broadcast sitcoms before it, Schooled is getting a second life and a chance to find a massive new audience on Netflix.
Wait, Does This Mean The Goldbergs is Coming to Netflix?
With Schooled touching down on the service, the immediate question on everyone’s mind is naturally about its parent show.
As we have previously covered in our streaming status guide for the show, The Goldbergs currently isn’t streaming on Netflix US. For the time being, all seasons of the Adam F. Goldberg comedy are exclusively streaming on Hulu. However, the arrival of Schooled might just be a glimmer of hope for fans wanting to see the original series make the jump eventually.
Given that we just reported on a massive licensing agreement between Disney and Netflix that includes several ABC network shows (like Will Trent and Shifting Gears), you might assume Schooled is part of that same package.
Interestingly, it isn’t!
While Schooled and The Goldbergs both aired on the Disney-owned ABC network, the series was actually produced and distributed by Sony Pictures Television. Because Sony operates as a neutral “arms dealer” in the streaming wars—meaning they don’t have their own dedicated, walled-garden streaming service to feed—they are always more than happy to license their extensive catalog out to the highest bidder.
This pickup falls squarely under Netflix’s incredibly cozy, ongoing relationship with Sony, which also includes the massive Pay-1 window deal for all of Sony’s theatrical films.
Don’t Confuse It With Mark Rober’s ‘Schooled‘!
If the title Schooled is ringing some bells for eagle-eyed Netflix subscribers, we need to clear up a little bit of timeline confusion.
This ABC sitcom is completely unrelated to the other upcoming Netflix project titled Schooled. As we reported last month, former NASA engineer and YouTube superstar Mark Rober recently partnered with the streamer for a new unscripted series also titled Schooled. Rober’s series will focus on the STEM advocate using his engineering genius to overcome various challenges and build incredible contraptions.
So, if you hit play on Schooled looking for Mark Rober building a glitter bomb, and instead find Tim Meadows dealing with 1990s high schoolers, you clicked on the wrong title!
