Al Roker Reveals His Unconventional Prep for His Daily ‘Today’ Show Appearances

21 February 20252 Mins Read

Some people have unique ways they prepare for their daily rituals and Today show fixture Al Roker is no different, although his prep may be a little stranger than others.

During an appearance Thursday, Feb. 20, on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the host asked Roker how he gets ready for his daily appearances on the Today show. Roker’s answer is bound to surprise most.

“There’s a television show, it’s kind of like Masterpiece Theatre only a little different,” Roker joked. “It was from the 19— late ‘70s, early ‘80s called The A-Team.”

Colbert interjected, noting that the show starred George Peppard and Mr. T, which Roker happily confirmed.

“Any way, every morning I play The A-Team theme and recite the beginning,” Roker added.

“Like a pledge?” Colbert asked.

“Yes,” Roker confirmed. And perhaps to prove he wasn’t joking, Roker did it live for Colbert.

“In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum-security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team!” Roker said to the wild applause of Colbert’s audience.

In advance of his appearance, Roker shared some love for Colbert on Instagram by posting video of their first meeting in 2008 during the Christmas in Rockefeller Center special. Colbert’s appearance was sandwiched between performances by Faith Hill and Tony Bennett. He used to airtime to promote his then-new DVD release A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All. In the clip, Roker jokingly called the then-host of The Colbert Report “the voice of this generation.”

In the post, Roker reflected, “We were kidding but had a great time.”
