Alberta has its own ‘Little Sahara’ covered in towering sand dunes

21 July 20263 Mins Read

Athabasca Dunes Ecological Reserve is home to a landscape you probably wouldn’t expect to find in Alberta. Tucked away in the province’s northern wilderness, this protected area is filled with rolling sand dunes that look like they belong somewhere much farther away.

Often nicknamed Alberta’s “Little Sahara,” this spot brings a desert-like landscape to one of the province’s most remote regions. And while it’s not a spot where you can simply pull up and explore, the reserve is a reminder that Alberta has plenty of hidden gems worth exploring beyond the usual mountains and lakes.

So how did a stretch of sand dunes end up in Alberta? Let’s take a look.

The history behind Athabasca Dunes Ecological Reserve

The Athabasca Dunes Ecological Reserve is the result of thousands of years of natural changes that have shaped the landscape we see today. According to Alberta Parks, the dunes were formed from sand deposits left behind by glaciers, and over time, the wind slowly started to reshape the area.

The massive dune system stretches approximately 100 kilometres along the southern shore of Lake Athabasca, creating one of the largest active sand dune landscapes in Canada. Some of the dunes reach heights of up to 12 metres, which is pretty wild considering the landscape is sitting right in the middle of Alberta.

But the sand dunes aren’t the only thing that makes this area so special. The unique conditions have allowed a variety of plants and wildlife to thrive here. The reserve is home to a mix of grasslands, low shrubs, and small aspen, and many of the species found in the area are considered rare in Alberta.

According to Alberta Parks, the area was officially designated as an ecological reserve in 1988 to help protect the unique environment. Unlike provincial parks designed for recreation, ecological reserves are created to preserve important natural features, ecosystems, and habitats.

Getting to the Athabasca Dunes Ecological Reserve

While the reserve is open to visitors, getting there isn’t as simple as hopping in the car and following a GPS.

Since the reserve is located in a remote part of northern Alberta, there are no roads that lead directly to it. Because of this, the journey requires a little more planning, with visitors needing to travel by aircraft or boat to reach the dunes.

And with no on-site services available, anyone visiting the reserve needs to plan ahead and come prepared to experience the landscape responsibly.

So next time someone says Alberta doesn’t have deserts or massive sand dunes, you know exactly where to send them!
