Alberta’s early fall forecast is out and here’s what to expect so far

15 July 20263 Mins Read

After a wet start to summer for many parts of Alberta, an early fall forecast for the province is hinting that it’s going to be a saturated one.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac has released its 2026 Canadian Edition, predicting a fall that will be milder than average across much of the Prairies. However, Albertans shouldn’t expect an extended camping season filled with nonstop sunshine and dry ground.

For the southern Prairies, including Calgary and Edmonton, warmer-than-average weather is expected across the region, with October bringing the biggest temperature departures from normal. The flipside to that is that both September and October should be wetter than normal — not news many folks want to hear following a drenched June and rounds of soaking thunderstorms so far this July for many regions.

Looking at Canada as a whole, it’s shaping up to be a milder fall overall. Warmer-than-average temperatures are expected across much of the country, while cooler weather settles into parts of central and northern Canada and southwestern British Columbia.

Alberta isn’t the only province at risk of seeing a fall that will require keeping the rain gear handy. Most of Canada is expected to experience above-average precipitation this fall, with much of British Columbia as the notable exception.

The Almanac’s famous long-range forecasts rest on three pillars: solar science, climatology, and meteorology. By watching the Sun’s activity, studying long-term weather patterns, and tracking changes in the atmosphere, it pieces together the signals that hint at what each season may bring.

The team then compares those signals to a 30-year statistical average prepared by government meteorological agencies; our current benchmark spans 1991–2020.

Do you think the fall forecast for Alberta will indeed be saturated as the Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting? Let us know in the comments.
