Alberta’s world-famous museum is offering free and discounted admission this summer

29 July 20253 Mins Read

This museum is every dinosaur lover’s greatest dream!

Located in the badlands of Drumheller, the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology is famous worldwide for its extensive collection of dinosaur fossils. This museum is Canada’s only museum dedicated exclusively to the study of ancient life.

The museum not only features one of the world’s largest displays of dinosaurs but also offers a variety of activities to get people moving through the badlands.

Thanks to the Canada Strong Pass, admission into the Royal Tyrrell Museum is free for youth between 7 and 17 until Sept. 2. For young adults (ages 18 to 24), admission is discounted by half, at $10.50.

On and after Sept. 3, admission will revert to regular prices until Sept. 27 and 28 for Alberta Culture Days. For those two days, admission will be free for everyone.

What to expect

The most exciting thing about the Royal Tyrrell Museum has to be the sheer number of exhibits they show.

From Cretaceous Alberta, providing a rare glimpse of Alberta over 69 million years ago, to the Palaeozoic Era, highlighting the diverse marine creatures of the past, the possibilities of discovery are endless.

This year, the museum unveiled its newest exhibit, the Breakthroughs.

Since 1985, the Royal Tyrrell Museum has been bringing the prehistoric past to life. In this exhibit, they showcase five extraordinary Alberta fossils which transformed the understanding of these specimens as we know them. Each of these fossils showcased is the best-preserved, most complete, first of its kind, or the only known specimen of its kind.

Last but not least, don’t forget about Dinosaur Hall.

Within this magical room, the eyes can spot all different types of recognizable dinosaurs, all displayed around. From the Triceratops to the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex, these dinosaurs are life-sized and standing tall above the average-sized human visitor.

In addition to their exhibits, the museum is offering activities this summer and into the fall.

For those adults looking to explore the landscape, we suggest the Badlands Adult Hike. This hike invites participants ages 16 and up to discover the badlands and walk the trail. The $18 experience runs daily at 10:30 a.m. until Aug. 31, allowing for 90 minutes each morning of immersion in the land.

Don’t worry, though; nobody gets to miss out. All ages are welcome to one of their other hikes, the Fossil Hunting Hike.

For $12, guests spend 90 minutes guided through the badlands by an experienced guide. Participants can begin learning about ancient Alberta as they search and touch real fossils. This hike is also available daily this summer, with starting times available at 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 p.m.

The full program schedule can be found here, so don’t miss out.

When: Open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day until Aug. 31
Where: 1500 N Dinosaur Tr., Drumheller, Alta.
Cost: Free admission for young adults (ages 18 to 24) until Sept. 2 and
