Some Aldi shoppers aren’t happy about the changes made to the store’s Organic Ketchup.
One Aldi shopper took to the store’s subreddit on Reddit to share their disappointment with the pantry staple’s new recipe. The post featured pictures of an older bottle and a newer bottle of the Simply Nature Ketchup. Per the photos, the original ingredients included Organic Tomato Concentrate, Organic Sugar, Organic Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Less Than 2 % of Organic Onion Powder, and Organic Spices. The new bottle’s ingredients are Organic Tomato Puree (Water, Organic Tomato Paste), Organic Sugar, Organic Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Organic Onion Powder, and Organic Spices, per the post. In addition, the newer Simply Nature Ketchup is 20 calories, has 200 mg of sodium, and 4 grams of sugar per tablespoon, while the older version is 15 calories, has 160 mg of sodium, and 3 grams of sugar per tablespoon.
In the caption of the post, the Reddit user wrote, “It’s over. They ruined the Organic Ketchup!”
“They changed the organic ketchup. More calories, more added sugar, and it’s definitely sweeter — and not in a good way. It’s noticeably worse. Even the lid was a nightmare to open. Why do they always ruin a good thing?” continued the Aldi shopper in the May 19 post.
Several commenters also expressed their disappointment about the changes in the Simply Nature Ketchup.
“Why can’t we have nice things?” wrote a Reddit user.
“That’s a shame. That’s been the only ketchup I’ve bought for years. It was more vinegar forward and not as sweet. That’s why I enjoyed it. If I want tomato syrup, I’ll buy Hunts,” added another.
“I agree. I bought a new bottle of the ketchup last week and def noticed the taste changed. It was good to begin with, so I don’t think the change was needed,” shared a different Aldi shopper.
“Omg, this is my favorite Ketchup EVER. I should’ve stocked up,” wrote a Reddit user.
“My night is ruined now,” commented another person.
“It’s true, they did. I noticed immediately the last time I purchased it. I won’t be buying it again. 😓,” chimed in a sixth Reddit user.
Some commenters also shared their theories as to why the ketchup now tastes different.
“Organic tomato puree vs organic tomato concentrate is definitely the reason. The organic tomato puree is water and organic tomato paste which is going to be much sweeter than tomato concentrate,” wrote a commenter.
“Looks like more water and sugar and less tomato. They think it is a small change and nobody will notice. Perhaps they changed suppliers? Find another store brand that matches the ingredients & nutrition label of the old aldis version,” chimed in another.
