Allison Janney’s Life in Her 60s and Women in Hollywood
In the accompanying interview with IRK Magazine, Janney opened up about embracing aging and finding confidence in her own skin.
When asked about her experience on set, The Diplomat star discussed how she felt empowered by the glam and the energy of the shoot.
“Well, I felt sexy in that photo shoot!” she said, adding, “When you get into the role — the glam, the clothes, the set — and Robert Ascroft is behind the camera, it lends itself to me accessing that place of sexual power inside.”
She also spoke about the true meaning of sex appeal for her.
“I find there is something sexy about a woman who is comfortable with herself — that’s sex appeal,” the actress added.
With the long-standing ageism and sexism in Hollywood, she believes progress has been made, but also points out the barriers that still exist.
“I think it is much better for women in Hollywood, but… There are still glass ceilings to be broken.”
Janney landed her first big break in 1998 when she appeared in Mike Nichols’ film Primary Colors, followed by another impressive role in Aaron Sorkin’s political drama The West Wing, where she played White House press secretary C. J. Cregg.
Now she’s considered one of the most respected and versatile stars of Hollywood.
