This summer, we went behind the scenes to capture filming of a Murdoch Mysteries episode that was shot right here in Turner Valley, Alta. The episode will air on Monday, Jan. 5, on CBC TV and CBC Gem, and it has now been announced that a beloved television character will also make a surprise cameo.
Heartland‘s Amber Marshall — who plays the lead character Amy Fleming on the show — will assist Detective William Murdoch as Annie Oakley in this special themed episode that takes place at the 1912 Calgary Stampede.
The episode is part of the 19th season of the longstanding Murdoch Mysteries television series, which follows lead detective Murdoch on his investigations into local murder mysteries.
Amber Marshall is a known face here in Alberta, as she’s starred on Heartland for the past few decades. She also lives and works in Diamond Valley, which creates little distance between her character and personality off-screen. The series is filmed in Alberta, and follows the life of Marshall’s character and her family’s experiences living on a ranch at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in a fictional Hudson, Alta.
In a few stills from the upcoming episode, Marshall can be seen on horseback and showing off her skills with a rifle. She plays Annie Oakley, an American sharpshooter and performer who starred in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West travelling sideshow. It’s a role that’s perfectly paired with the actress, and we were lucky enough to snap a few pics of it all in action!

Filmed near Calgary
The new episode, filmed over three days this past summer in the scenic hills of Cowboy Trail, is set at the historic 1912 Calgary Stampede. Detective William Murdoch and Inspector Thomas Brackenreid are bound for the rodeo on a relaxing vacation before they’re roped into a mysterious death.
The episode features elements of the historic rodeo event in its very first-ever iteration. Murdoch leads investigations into the case, with assistance from Marshall.
It’s a dreamy crossover of two of CBC’s most popular shows, where Murdoch Mysteries and Heartland fans will converge. Plus, with views of the Alberta foothills as a backdrop, it should be a must-watch for every Calgarian’s list.

You might recognize a location or two in this upcoming episode that airs on Monday, Jan. 5. Set a reminder and make sure you tune in!
