Porto has quietly become one of Europe’s most buzzed-about summer destinations—and now it’s about to get much easier to reach from the U.S. American Airlines has announced a new nonstop route to Porto, launching in summer 2027, giving travelers a direct line to Portugal’s laid-back, wine-soaked northern city just as “Euro summer” planning hits its peak.
If Lisbon feels polished and buzzy, Porto is its more relaxed, romantic sibling—a city where time is measured in walks along the Douro River, long lunches that linger and evenings that revolve around shared bottles of vinho verde and port. It’s a city known for its colorful riverfront, blue-and-white azulejo tiles and food scene that’s far more exciting than its size might suggest. Add in easy access to the Douro Valley—home to terraced vineyards, river cruises and dramatic scenery—and it’s no surprise Porto keeps landing on “where to go next” lists.

American’s new nonstop will be operated on the airline’s Airbus A321XLR, a long-range, narrow-body aircraft designed to open up exactly these kinds of routes—cities that don’t always get nonstop service, but travelers are eager to visit. For passengers, that also means a more premium experience than you might expect on a single-aisle jet. The flight will feature American’s Flagship Suite® seats up front, complete with privacy doors and lie-flat comfort, along with Premium Economy and Main Cabin options for travelers looking to tailor their trip.
“Porto is exactly the type of new market the Airbus A321XLR enables us to serve,” Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning Brian Znotins told team members at the airline’s annual leadership conference this week, according to a recent American Airlines’ newsroom release. “While we’ll have even more new routes to share later this year for summer 2027, we’re eager to continue growing our long-haul network that features service to new destinations, including Budapest, Hungary and Prague that will start this summer.”

The Porto route also complements American’s existing year-round service to Lisbon, giving Portugal-bound travelers more flexibility—and a compelling reason to skip backtracking across the country. Fly into Porto, explore the north, then work your way south or simply settle in and enjoy the city at a slower pace.
With this new nonstop, Porto officially moves from “great idea, slightly tricky to get to” to an easy yes. And for travelers plotting their next European summer, that timing couldn’t be better.
