Anime’s most overlooked sci-fi masterpiece is streaming free on YouTube

1 August 20264 Mins Read

In just over a decade, Studio Colorido has quietly become one of anime’s most dependable homes for heartfelt fantasy. Whether it’s the shape-shifting romance of A Whisker Away, the emotional floodwaters of Drifting Home, or the more recent Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, Colorido has built a reputation for stories where extraordinary events crash into the everyday lives of children. Its films are defined by bright, expressive animation and a belief that growing up shouldn’t mean leaving behind your imagination.

Yet for all the acclaim its later releases have earned, Colorido’s greatest achievement remains the first film the studio ever made. Long before Netflix helped introduce its films to a global audience, the studio released a quietly brilliant adaptation of Tomihiko Morimi’s award-winning novel that’s unlike anything else in its catalog, and you can stream it for free right now on YouTube.

Penguin Highway remains the clearest expression of the ideas that have come to define Hiroyasu Ishida’s work, later cropping up in Drifting Home. Ishida is fascinated by childhood curiosity and the invisible line between ordinary life and fantasy when raw imagination takes hold. Nowhere does he explore these ideas with more confidence than in the 2018 film. Rather than whisking viewers away to another world, Ishida transforms an unassuming suburban neighborhood into one of the most enchanting science-fiction settings anime has produced since the likes of Den-oh Coil or FLCL.

Based on Morimi’s 2010 novel, the story tracks elementary school student Aoyama, whose meticulously organized life is interrupted when penguins begin inexplicably appearing throughout his quiet town. As the impossible incidents multiply — and a mysterious floating sphere seems to warp reality itself — Aoyama approaches each new phenomenon with the mind of a scientist and wisdom far beyond his years. He documents observations, tests theories, and treats every impossible occurrence as another puzzle waiting to be solved.

Penguin Highway argues that science and wonder are inseparable forces, veering in a direction unlike that of many coming-of-age fantasies to which you might try compare it. Aoyama’s relentless curiosity never diminishes the surrounding magic, but instead expands it to reveal even more exciting questions, dropping him further into a world that’s as fascinating as it is enlightening. The film suggests that maturity isn’t about losing a sense of wonder but about developing better ways to explore it as we grow older.

That philosophy extends to the film’s setting. There are no sprawling fantasy kingdoms or hidden magical schools. Instead, Penguin Highway finds the extraordinary in residential streets, neighborhood forests, convenience stores, and empty fields shimmering in the summer heat. The suburb itself becomes the source of the film’s magic. A line of penguins waddling across an ordinary road feels miraculous precisely because everything surrounding them is so normal.

It’s also one of anime’s finest summer movies outside Studio Ghibli’s filmography. Ishida captures the peculiar rhythm of childhood summer vacation with stunning vibrance and familiarity. Whether Aoyama is watching penguins emerge from discarded soda cans, venturing toward the mysterious “Sea” hidden beyond reality, or racing across quiet suburban streets in search of his next clue, every day feels like the start of another impossible adventure. Even as the story grows increasingly cosmic, it never loses sight of those intimate experiences that make childhood adventures feel so universal.

It might not be discussed with the same reverence as other films in its catalog or even against giants like Ghibli, but Penguin Highway remains Studio Colorido’s defining work and Hiroyasu Ishida’s finest film. It established the visual warmth and emotional sincerity the studio would become known for while telling a science fiction mystery that feels wholly its own. If your introduction to Studio Colorido came through its Netflix-era hits, Penguin Highway is the film that reveals where its voice was forged — and why its first feature-length film is still the studio’s crowning achievement.
