The first Monday in May is quickly approaching, and while this year it falls on the same day as Cinco de Mayo, it also happens to be fashion’s biggest night of the year: the Met Gala. This year’s theme is “Superfine, Tailoring Black Style,” which was inspired by Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity by Monica L. Miller. Personally, I’m equally excited and worried about given that a bit of casual racism is par for the course among fashion’s elite.
All eyes (and cameras) will be on the celebs, which also includes the woman behind it all, Anna Wintour. The famous Vogue editor-in-chief recently revealed that she banned garlic, chives and onion from the Met Gala dinner, but we recently got a little peek into her food life outside this splashy event.
Celebrity chef and restaurateur Geoffrey Zakarian recently went viral on TikTok showing how to make what used to be Anna’s go-to lunch order when she dined at his restaurant. According to Zakarian, she ordered this meal every single day. I found it intriguing and a bit perplexing, much like the woman herself.

What Was Anna Wintour’s Go-To Lunch Order?
You can rely on Anna Wintour to wear her hair in the same bob she’s donned for decades, rock a large, dark pair of shades, and apparently, once upon a time, to chow down on a very rare burger patty with a side of mashed potatoes every day for lunch.
According to Zakarain, she would begin the meal with a cappuccino, sunglasses firmly in place. “She had sunglasses on, never took them off, even when she ate,” Chef Zakarian recounts. Also, “she would obliterate the entire thing in less than 15 minutes.” Atta girl, Anna. Like I said, intriguing and a bit perplexing.

This Isn’t Just Any Hamburger Patty and Mashed Potatoes
Let’s start with the hamburger patty she’d order. First things first, it wasn’t even an item that was available on the menu. In fact, because she’s the Anna Wintour, the restaurant had it “ground fresh every day for her,” says Zakarian. Adding, “she wanted it saignant, like bloody-ass rare. Almost raw…” To each their own, but if you’re reading this at home, please make sure your burger is cooked to at least 160°, per the USDA’s safety recommendations.
Now onto the mashed potatoes. They were Robuchon mashed potatoes, named for the legendary French chef, Joel Robuchon, who invented the recipe. Robuchon mashed potatoes are ultra-luxurious. How luxurious? They’re 60 percent butter and 40 percent potato. Let that sink in.

This style of mashed potatoes, or purée de pomme, is quite popular in fine dining. So, if you’ve ever wondered why the mashed potatoes you make at home aren’t quite as delectable as ones you may have eaten while dining out, you’re probably not using anywhere near the same amount of butter.
Robuchon mashed potatoes are a vision of silky, velvety, carby goodness, and I have nothing but respect for Anna opting to eat them day in and day out. The burger patty? Well, that’s another story, but again, to each their own.
