Incendiary Playwrights Initiative – Audition Call
Incendiary Festival is looking for actors for a workshop reading in the Playwrights Initiative. We have a workshop reading of a new play taking place in October

The Initiative: The goal of this project is to give playwrights, actors, directors, and dramaturgs a chance to grow their skills, try something new, and make connections without the pressure or time commitment of a full production. We also want to connect with creatives who share our values and connect with our process for potential work on our full-scale projects in the future.

Throughout the season, we will be producing eleven readings of new works by Albertan playwrights. Each project is unique and focuses on experimenting with different storytelling styles. Depending on the show, preparations for the reading will include anywhere from one to four rehearsal dates, culminating in a performance to remember.

Whether you’ve always wanted to try your hand at acting but never have, or are looking for the perfect bite-sized project to fill out your packed schedule, this is an opportunity to try something new and connect with other creatives.
Incendiary Festival is incredibly passionate about working with performers of all ages, body types, ethnicities, and with folks with disabilities. If you are interested in the projects, we are interested in seeing you. Period.

CARNATICUM by Madeline Hunter Smith

Play Summary:
In an alternate world, a peasant family of three confronts an especially bleak winter on their homestead within the forest. Food supply dwindles and Cybelle begins to question her true identity, as her marriage with headstrong husband Jonas crumbles. At the same time, her son, Victor, believes he sees women in the woods, escaped from the eerie Hag Rock, a place no one has ever come back from. As psyches are stretched thin, and the threat of a tyrannical Baron repossessing their home draws ever closer, Cybelle and her family are forced to unearth who they are, and where they came from, before it is too late.

Character Descriptions:
Cybelle: 30s-40s. Strong-willed. Intelligent. A mother. A goddess.
Jonas: 30s-40s. Older than Cybelle. Strong sense of values. Single-minded. A father.
Victor: 18. Resourceful. Timid. Clever. A son.
Fawn: Cybelle’s age. Meek. Sacrificial. Compassionate. A virgin.
Wolf: Cybelle’s age. Destructive. Powerful. Threatening. A hunter.

Compensation:
Incendiary Festival operates under a profit-share model. This means we can not guarantee compensation, as the profit is never guaranteed. However, we do everything we can to ensure our projects fit around your other commitments and are rewarding in other ways.
