THE DOOMED PRINCE
Director: Mark Henderson
Project Dates: June 2, 2025 – July 11, 2025; September 3 – 7, 2025; October 1 – 17, 2025
Theatre Prospero is assembling an ensemble of up to three (3) non-Equity emerging artists to devise, facilitate, and perform THE DOOMED PRINCE, an intensely interactive theatre piece for the young and young at heart, around Edmonton.
By intensely interactive, we mean that audience members will play most of the parts in the 15 minute play, with line by line prompting from cast members, after completing a short workshop. One of the actors will narrate to anchor the performance. All performers will be expected to know all the lines of the script, just in case. Performances will be outdoors at festivals, and playgrounds in the summer, and in schools. Playfulness and flexibility will be crucial attributes.
THE DOOMED PRINCE is an ancient Egyptian story about a Prince doomed to die by Snake, Dog, or Crocodile. The Prince, After many adventures, he escapes from the snake and the dog, ending up face-to-face in the Nile with a crocodile. The Prince pleads for his life, which the crocodile says he will spare, if the Prince does “one thing” for him…
…and at that point in the story, the papyrus that it was written on was ripped. So no one knows the original ending! At each performance the audience will create a new ending with the cast.
PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION
We want to get to know you as a performer and/or creator. You may be further along on your journey in one of these roles than the other—no matter! Please prepare a 4-8 minute presentation that demonstrates your current artistic practice, as well as your aspirations for it. Any combination of monologue, poem, song, dance, or other kind of storytelling is very welcome. The main thing we ask is that you prepare something that responds in some way to the world(s) of what we call mythology. What do we mean by that? To quote Joseph Campbell: “Myths are public dreams, dreams are private myths.” To us, mythology is—once again quoting Joseph Campbell!—“the song of the Universe.”
