August snow turns parts of Alberta into a winter wonderland before summer’s even over

31 August 20262 Mins Read

Some parts of Alberta completely skipped fall and went straight to winter, with areas of the province receiving some late August snow overnight.

Luckily, the snow is set to steer clear of any major cities and will be sticking to just high-altitude mountainous areas in Alberta, with snow being spotted on the morning of Sunday, Aug. 30.

As of writing, the current cold spot in Alberta was the Nakiska Ridgetop weather station, which is sitting at -0.1°C and has a windchill value of -6°C.

Areas that receive Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) forecasts from that station, such as Kananaskis Village, had an outlook for today that included a mention that the snow level would rise from 2200 metres to 2700 metres this afternoon.

We took a gander at some of the live webcams up at ski hills in the mountains, and views at  Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise show a winter wonderland landscape.

The Banff Sunshine Village ski resort had particular fun with its snowfall, posting to its Facebook page, ” Hello WINTER! Mother Nature is getting excited for the return of the ski and snowboard season.”

As we march towards winter, there has been a flurry of early winter forecasts for the province. OpenSnow, a U.S. based forecast service, is calling for above-normal temperatures for a large swath of Alberta, including areas like Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat.

The Farmers’ Almanac Canada winter forecast for 2026–2027 is also calling for a season of dramatic contrasts, and here’s what they had to say for Alberta.

Looking a little closer, we also got the scoop from ECCC about how the forecast for September in Alberta is shaping up.
