B.C.’s mini heat wave smashes nearly 100-year-old weather records this week

24 June 20263 Mins Read

Metro Vancouver and much of B.C. are in the midst of a mini heat wave, and this week, several hot weather temperature records, some nearly 100 years old, melted away.

And if our recent weather report is accurate, we could see more records broken before a weather change for cooler, wetter conditions.

On June 22, 14 daily temperature records were broken in total, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

The hottest temperature B.C. reached was in Squamish, which saw a new record of 33.1°C, besting a previous June 22 record of 30°C that was set in 1990.

Other areas where records were broken closer to Vancouver include West Vancouver, which saw a new record of 30.6°C, beating the old record of 29°C set in 1992.

White Rock completely smashed the previous June 14 daily temperature record, which was set in 1936, meaning it was 90 years old. 28.3˚C was the record set back in 1936. The new record is 31°C.

Victoria also broke a 90-year-old temperature record of 28.9°C set in 1936. The new record is 30.9°C. The Duncan Area also beat a 90-year-old record of 31.1°C, reaching a new high of 31.8°C.

While not as far back as 1936, Abbotsford beat a record previously set in 1958 of 31.7°C. Yesterday, it saw temperatures rise to 32.4°C.

You can see the full list of places that set new daily temperature records on the ECCC weather summaries page.

As we reported yesterday, Metro Vancouver is in for a little more heat before quite the turnaround to cooler and potentially wetter conditions. Over the next 24 hours, inland temperatures could climb to as high as 31°C, while the humidex could make it feel as warm as 35°C.

Tomorrow, temperatures should feel like 30°C. Then on Thursday, ECCC predicts a high of 20°C, with some showers.

Overnight lows are going to progress from around 15°C tonight to 11°C by Friday.

This week also marks the fifth anniversary of the heat dome, and thankfully, it doesn’t appear as though we’ll be getting weather anywhere near as warm in B.C. anytime soon.

Also, be sure to read about how a super El Niño could impact the weather next year.
