Best-Selling Author’s Novel Named Among ‘Greatest Books of All Time’

15 April 20263 Mins Read

Few novels have left as profound a mark on literature as Beloved.

The bestselling work by Toni Morrison has been ranked among the greatest books of all time by The Greatest Books, a platform that compiles and weighs hundreds of literary lists to determine a consensus ranking based on influence, credibility and critical recognition.

Originally published in 1987, Beloved is the first book in a trilogy that begins with the haunting story of Sethe, a formerly enslaved woman living in post-Civil War Ohio who is forced to confront the trauma of her past. When a mysterious young woman named Beloved enters her life, long-buried memories resurface, blurring the line between past and present in deeply unsettling ways.

“In 1983, I started thinking about the ways in which women love things. I thought it was going to be one book with three parts, but it turned out to be three books,” Morrison told Brick. “The women are in historical situations in which the act of love is compromised or impossible, or requires some Herculean or heroic activity. In Beloved, it seemed a powerful metaphor that claiming responsibility for your children could be seen as anarchy or revolution or sabotage. For Sethe, it was freedom; the battle was to have and be responsible for her children—in other words to love them.”

Widely praised for its lyrical prose and emotional depth, the novel explores themes of memory, identity and the lasting impact of slavery. Morrison’s storytelling blends realism with elements of the supernatural, creating a narrative that is both intimate and expansive in scope.

The book was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, further cementing its status as a landmark achievement in American literature. It also played a significant role in Morrison later receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature.

“All my books were questions for me. I wanted to know: What would happen if . . . ? What do friendship and love mean under those circumstances? How far would you go? I don’t want to write about when it’s normal, but when there’s a serious cataclysm and conflict in belief, a complexity of emotion and behavior,” Morrison explained.

Beloved was later adapted into the film of the same name, starring Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover, bringing the story to a wider audience.

Decades after its release, Beloved continues to be studied, discussed and celebrated.

With its inclusion in The Greatest Books ranking, Morrison’s novel stands as a testament to the enduring power of storytelling and its ability to confront history while shaping the future of literature.
