Best-Selling Author’s Novel Ranked Among ‘Best Books of This Century’ on Goodreads

6 July 20264 Mins Read

Some novels don’t simply tell a story, they invite readers into an entirely new world.

That has been the enduring appeal of Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s The Shadow of the Wind. Originally published in Spanish in 2001 before being translated into dozens of languages, the novel has become one of the defining works of modern literary fiction. Its lasting influence has now been recognized once again with a place on Goodreads’ list of the Best Books of the 21st Century, a ranking voted on by the site’s global reading community.

The novel introduced readers to one of literature’s most memorable settings.

Set in postwar Barcelona, The Shadow of the Wind follows a young boy named Daniel Sempere, who discovers a mysterious novel in the hidden “Cemetery of Forgotten Books.” As he searches for information about its elusive author, Julián Carax, Daniel is drawn into a decades-spanning mystery involving love, betrayal, obsession and family secrets.

“The Cemetery of Forgotten Books is like the greatest, most fantastic library you could ever imagine,” Zafón told TIME in 2009. “It’s a labyrinth of books with tunnels, bridges, arches, secret sections — and it’s hidden inside an old palace in the old city of Barcelona. It’s a secret place that very few people know about, and in there you can find all of the books that have been lost, that have been forgotten and that people have tried to destroy.”

Readers around the world quickly embraced the story.

Following its English-language publication in 2004, The Shadow of the Wind became an international bestseller, earning widespread praise for its richly atmospheric writing, intricate plotting and unforgettable characters. Critics frequently compared Zafón’s storytelling to classic Gothic fiction while celebrating his ability to blend literary fiction, historical drama and suspense into a single, immersive novel.

The book also launched an acclaimed series.

The Shadow of the Wind became the first installment in Zafón’s celebrated Cemetery of Forgotten Books series, followed by The Angel’s Game, The Prisoner of Heaven and The Labyrinth of the Spirits. Together, the novels created an interconnected literary universe that has attracted millions of readers worldwide.

“What I did was take what for me is very important, which is take all the great ambition in all those nineteenth-century novels, but try to reconstruct those big novels – the Tolstoy, the Dickens, the Wilkie Collins – but try to reconstruct all of that with all the narrative elements that the twentieth century has given us, from the grammar of cinema, from multimedia, from general fiction, from everything that is out there, to create a much more intense reading experience for the readers,” Zafón said in an interview. “So that was the idea, and that was the experiment to create with The Shadow of the Wind.”

Although Zafón died in 2020 at the age of 55, his work continues to reach new audiences through bookstores, libraries and online reading communities. The Shadow of the Wind remains especially beloved among readers who appreciate beautifully written mysteries and novels that celebrate the transformative power of books themselves.

“Now more than ever, I believe it is up to us to decide if we want to think by ourselves, or if we want to accept and submit to what others would rather have us believe,” Zafón told Book Browse. “I’d say TV is a very powerful medium, which can be used, and sometimes it is used, to accomplish great things. Unfortunately, those are exceptions to the rule. But blaming TV as an abstract entity is nonsensical. It’s our hand on the remote. There’s a world out there outside the tube. Life’s short: Wake up and live.”

Its inclusion among Goodreads’ Best Books of the 21st Century reflects the extraordinary legacy the novel has built over the past two decades. More than 20 years after its original publication, The Shadow of the Wind continues to enchant readers with its unforgettable portrait of Barcelona, its labyrinthine mystery and its enduring belief that stories have the power to change lives.
