Booking.com has partnered with OpenAI, using its Large Language Models (LLMs) to personalize travel at scale. This collaboration aims to create a more user-friendly travel planning experience, addressing the challenge of understanding user intent, especially during the early discovery phase.
Booking.com’s traditional machine learning models and rule-based systems had difficulties capturing the nuances of user intent. Despite offering a plethora of filters, these tools were only useful if users knew precisely what they were looking for. However, the advent of large language models opened new opportunities for a more conversational, discovery-driven experience.
In response to this need, Booking.com assembled a task force to develop the AI Trip Planner, integrating OpenAI’s GPT models with their proprietary data. The AI Trip Planner allows users to ask open-ended questions, generate destination suggestions, build itineraries, and provide real-time availability and pricing data. This innovative tool combines structured data, like pricing and availability, with unstructured data, such as user reviews and natural language descriptions, to offer curated suggestions.
In addition to its robust data capabilities, the AI Trip Planner was notable for its rapid development cycle. The first prototype was launched in just 10 weeks, demonstrating the effectiveness of Booking.com’s collaborative relationship with OpenAI. The tool has since been expanded to handle more complex requests and provide deeper personalization.
Early results from the AI Trip Planner have been promising, with increased user engagement, faster searches, reduced customer support contacts, and increased booking confidence. The tool’s success has demonstrated the efficacy of OpenAI’s models in understanding intent and adapting to real-world complexities and highlighted the rapid adaptation of customer behavior towards more detailed, conversational queries.
Booking.com’s leadership attributes the success of this project not only to OpenAI’s technology but also to its collaborative approach. This ethos of co-creation has allowed them to shape early-stage ideas and explore future possibilities. By integrating AI into its operations, Booking.com envisions a future where AI serves as a concierge-like companion throughout the travel journey.
