It’s been a long time coming, but Eau Claire Plaza in Calgary will officially reopen to the public this summer.
What to expect
With a brand new look and space for all, the inner city destination has announced that July 2 will be the big day, and that’s no understatement.
In order to commemorate the revitalization, the city will offer free programming, which will include a youth basketball clinic with Calgary Surge at Century Gardens and recreational classes in Lot 6, but that’s hardly all.
There will also be food trucks, live entertainment, speeches, and giveaways in the area starting at noon.
This event is a chance for Calgarians to explore the revitalized Plaza,” they wrote.
“The celebration will begin with a 30-minute formal ceremony, followed by a lively community gathering that highlights the plaza’s versatile design and thoughtful integration of historic elements.”
Why the facelift?
They say that if something isn’t broken, you shouldn’t fix it, but there’s nothing wrong with an upgrade now and then.
A popular spot for midday adventurers, dog walkers, and joggers, Eau Claire will now be more accessible to more people, according to the city.
“The Eau Claire Plaza is being redesigned as part of the refresh of the Eau Claire area to allow for more flexible year-round uses,” they explain.
“Its new design embraces everyday community gatherings in addition to spaces for hosting larger events and festivals.”
Of course, it wasn’t without loss to some.
In order to complete the project, the city had to demolish Eau Claire Market, and it took some Calgarians by surprise, but it made way for walkways, trees, and more green space.
Not only that, but this project will aid in flood protection.
“The Plaza is also being reconstructed to align with flood protection work happening in Eau Claire – the Eau Claire Promenade/Downtown Flood Barrier,” the city continued.
“The Plaza was re-graded as part of The City’s Flood Resilience Plan in order to protect Eau Claire and Calgary’s downtown from future flooding. The City’s Flood Resilience Plan manages flood risk in Calgary.”
